Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is generally used in the treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the prevention of malaria. In both instances, Doxycycline slows down the spread of the infection, making the bacteria or parasite responsible vulnerable, so that the body's immune system can fight it more effectively.
Doxycycline is particularly effective in the treatment of sexually transmitted infections caused by bacteria, such as chlamydia, non-specific urethritis and ureaplasma. Doxycycline is taken in a lower dose over a longer period of time, compared to STI treatments such as Azithromycin, which makes it less likely to cause side effects.
It is also often prescribed to people who are travelling to areas of the world where the malaria parasite has developed immunity to Paludrine and Avloclor. This preventative treatment works to kill the malaria parasite in the blood, before it causes the malaria disease.
You can order Doxycycline from HealthExpress after completing a quick and confidential online consultation. In this consultation, you will be required to answer questions about your medical history and health, which will help our doctors establish if Doxycycline is safe for you to take.
What are the benefits of using Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is a wide spectrum antibiotic that is used for a broad range of infections, but it is particularly effective at curing sexually transmitted infections and preventing malaria.
When treating sexually transmitted infections, Doxycycline is effective in lower dosages and can in some cases be prescribed to people who have had side effects when taking other antibiotics.
Doxycycline has been proven to prevent malaria in areas where the parasite has developed immunity to medications such as Paludrine and Avloclor, and can effectively protect against all four different malaria parasites.
How does Doxycycline work?
Bacteria that cause sexually transmitted infections need to make protein to help it spread and stay alive, and Doxycycline inhibits its ability to do this. This gives your body's own immune system the help it needs to kill off the infection.
Similarly, Doxycycline prevents the malaria (plasmodium) parasite from multiplying once it's in the blood, which leaves it vulnerable against your body's natural defences. This action prevents the malaria parasite from reaching your liver, where it can cause long term health problems.
How do you take it?
To successfully treat non-specific urethritis, chlamydia and ureaplasma, one Doxycycline tablet should be taken twice a day for seven days. You mustn't stop taking the medicine before the end of the prescribed treatment. To ensure that you are completely cured, we recommend performing another STI test at home, two weeks after completing the course.
To prevent a malaria infection, you should start taking one Doxycycline tablet a day for two days before you intend on travelling, and then continue until the fourth week after you return.
Who can take it?
Doxycycline can be used to treat non-specific urethritis, chlamydia or ureaplasma and will help to prevent malaria in most healthy people. There may, however, be medications and medical conditions that may make it unsafe for you to buy Doxycycline. You should make sure to provide information about your health in as much detail as possible during your consultation.
You will not be able to use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a hereditary blood disorder or if you have had an allergic reaction to Doxycycline in the past. If you are using an oral contraceptive such as the pill, it may not be effective when you use this treatment.
What are the side effects?
As it is effective in lower doses, it is normally very well tolerated. The most common side effects are usually mild and may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion or abdominal pain, difficulty or pain when swallowing, loss of appetite or flushing.
Is Doxycycline available online?
You can order Doxycycline for the treatment of non-specific urethritis, chlamydia and ureaplasma; or for the prevention of malaria. All you will need to do is complete a quick online consultation, which is completely free to take. Once you have completed it, it will be viewed by one of our registered doctors. Once your consultation is reviewed, you will be provided with a selection of treatments that are suitable to your condition. Once you have made your choice, our doctor will issue a prescription that will be passed on to our pharmacy, who will then dispatch it to you for next-day delivery.
Please note that the manufacturer of Doxycycline may differ from that shown on the image above, but the ingredients, benefits and possible side effects of the medication will be the same.
