Ureaplasma Urealyticum

Ureaplasma Urealyticum This is a bacterial infection that affects about 70% of sexually active men and women, although it is not a classic STI.

What is it?

Ureaplasma urealyticum is a bacterium that affects up to 70% of sexually active couples. Although it is still a sexually transmitted infection, it's not considered to be one of the standard STIs. This is because people may never experience problems because of it, but it can in some cases cause infertility and can lead to other serious infections.

A ureaplasma infection is caused by the spread of an infectious agent from an infected person to another, through saliva, blood, air, needles or sexual contact. This infection is extremely contagious and is most often spread though unprotected sexual contact, mostly occurring amongst those with multiple sexual partners. In extreme instances, you can also contract ureaplasma urealyticum by touching the secretions of an infected person’s eyes or nose.

What are the symptoms of ureaplasma urealyticum?

A ureaplasma urealyticum infection often shows no symptoms and most people don’t even know that they are infected, which is why it is so important to test for this infection at least once a year. If you do, however, experience symptoms they are likely to include lower abdominal pains, painful urination, unusual discharge and bleeding in the urethra.

People often discover they have the infection when they experience symptoms of another condition, such as urethritis (an inflammation of the urethra), epididymitis (an inflammation of the testicles) and chorioamnionitis (redness and inflammation around the genitals, discharge and painful urination).

What are the risks?

If left untreated, a ureaplasma urealyticum infection is associated with infertility, premature or still-birth, chorioamnionitis, non-specific urethritis, meningitis and pneumonia.

It can also spread to other parts of your body and cause long-term damage to your joints, nerves and muscles.

Can you cure ureaplasma urealyticum?

Antibiotics are the simplest and most successful ureaplasma urealyticum treatment. You should always complete the full course of medication, even if your symptoms disappear during the treatment process.

Azithromycin is a highly-concentrated treatment option that is used to cure bacterial infections such as ureaplasma, and prevents infections from spreading by affecting the bacteria’s ability to regenerate itself within the body.

Doxycycline is another treatment option for this infection, which works by making the harmful bacteria vulnerable so that the good bacteria in your body are able to fight off the infection more easily. It is taken over the course of a week and is available in lower dosages than Azithromycin, which may help you to negate your risk of experiencing side effects.

To successfully treat ureaplasma urealyticum, a single dosage Azithromycin tablet of 1000mg is required. Alternatively, you can take a course of Doxycycline 100mg twice a day for seven days for effective treatment.
