Impotence

Impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction (ED), is a condition which can make it difficult for men to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for them to have sex with their partner. This condition, which will affect most men at some stage in their lives, is increasingly common and it has been recorded through recent studies that up to 33% of men in the UK suffer from Impotence at any given time.

Despite how common erectile dysfunction is, it often remains untreated for most due to the intimate and sometimes embarrassing nature of this condition. Treatment for erectile dysfunction has come along way over the last ten years, with the vast majority of cases being easily remedied by one of several orally taken treatments now available. Previously, before the release of these medications which include Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, medicated treatments for impotence had to be administered either by insertion into the urethra or injection into the base of the penis, which many men found to be understandably uncomfortable and even painful. With the advent of these revolutionary treatments, the outlook for those who suffer from erectile dysfunction has dramatically improved.

What causes impotence?

It is a common misconception that erectile dysfunction or impotence is an inevitability which comes with age; it is not. Impotence can develop at any age and although the likelihood of developing this condition does increase in later life, it is by no means the sole or most frequent cause. Physical conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease and atherosclerosis account for as many as 75% of chronic erectile dysfunction cases with psychological issues making up the rest of cases.

What are the possible physical causes of impotence?

  • diabetes
  • side effects of medication
  • hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis)
  • neurological diseases
  • high cholesterol
  • kidney disorders
  • pelvic surgery
  • smoking
  • alcoholism or other substance abuse

What treatment options are available for impotence?

There are a number of different options available to men who have erectile dysfunction or impotence. These options, which range from oral treatments such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra to surgical treatments for more severe cases, can be found in the summaries below which have been written to help you make an informed decision about your treatment.

  • Oral treatment –These include treatments like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. These first line treatments are successful in up to 90% of impotence patients.

  • Alprostadil – These impotence treatments include those administered both by injection (such as Caverject and Edex) and by insertion directly into the urethra (Muse). Patients prescribed these medications will either be unable to take oral treatments or have not experienced satisfactory results from there use.

  • Vacuum pumps – Devices such as these work by causing blood to rush into the penis but only treat impotence temporarily. The vacuum pumps are made up of a cylindrical tube and either a hand operated or electric pump. Once the desired effects are achieve with an erection gained, it is then necessary to put a tension ring around the base of the penis to stop any blood from being removed which maintains the erection. This is said to be safest way to treat impotence as no drugs are involved.

  • Hormone treatment – In rare cases impotence is the direct effect of hormone abnormalities. These, which are mostly directly related to the male sex hormone testosterone, are treated using testosterone preparations. It is unwise to begin a course of therapy such as this without the strict advice of your doctor or until tests have confirmed that your impotence is a result of these abnormalities.

  • Surgery – In some extremely rare cases, when all other treatments have failed, it may be necessary to undergo surgical operations to treat impotence and restore function to the penis. The most common of these are penile prosthesis (implants) of which there are two types; semi-rigid and hydraulic. Semi-rigid implants keep the penis rigid at all times, but allow for the patient to move these downwards when not engaged in sexual intercourse. The other type, hydraulic, usually consist of a pump which is quite often located in the scrotum which when operated causes the penis to become rigid.
