Three Swans Dead Due to Bird Flu in Dorset, UK

The first case of bird flu virus in the UK was recorded in April 2006 in Scotland. Extensive control was taken up at that time. A new case of bird flu in the UK was reported, as three wild swans in Dorset died due to the avian virus strain and a fourth one was tested positive.

H5N1 Strain of Bird Flu Virus Detected in Dorset

According to a Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) in the UK, highly infectious H5N1 virus has been detected in three swans, near Chesil beach in Dorset in the UK. This discovery was made when the department officials were on a routine surveillance.

Britain at Low Risk Bird Flu

According to Chief Veterinary Officer, Fred Landeg, "While this is obviously unwelcome news, we have always said that Britain is at a constant low level of risk of introduction of Avian Influenza." Despite this, the British government have taken precautionary measures and over the past few years have made an effort to buy Tamiflu in the event of an unexpected outbreak.

Public to Take Precautions

Landeg said, "Our message to all bird keepers, particularly those in the area, is that they must be vigilant, report any signs of disease immediately, and practise the highest levels of biosecurity."
People should take precautions to help prevent bird flu infections. Some effective medicines, including the likes of Tamiflu and Relenza, can help in prevention of flu infections. World Health Organization recommends oseltamivir as the best treatment drug for people who have been exposed to H5N1 virus.
