Female sexual dysfunction - not such a rare condition

How common is female sexual dysfunction?

Despite a number of misconceptions surrounding the condition, Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD) affects around 50% of the female population.

Generally speaking, the sufferer will experience a reduction in their libido, a lack of arousal and or an inability to climax during sex.

Whilst experts often associate a number of physical causes and illnesses with FSD, it can be brought on by a number of psychological factors, from work related stress, through to relationship strains. The problem is often accentuated by a lack of understanding from the respective partner.

Whilst a large number of people subscribe to the common, yet misconceived idea that female sexual dysfunction is not a genuine problem, it can have a detrimental effect upon relationships and even the quality of life of the sufferer.

Worrying figures

Recent studies have found that one in four British women over the age of 35 had never experienced an orgasm. The finding was born of a detailed study and many of the reasons put forward included maternal responsibilities and stress, excessive working hours and work related stress.

A survey also uncovered that demographics and geography often played a role as middle aged women in Scotland were particularly prone to suffering with poor libidos with 38% claiming that they don’t have regular sex. At the other end of the scale women from the Midlands were found to be regular rompers, having sex at least once a week.

New theories emerging

The long standing debate over whether Female Sexual Dysfunction is a common condition has lead a number of experts to question whether one particular symptom; the inability to climax during sex, could in fact be down to genes and not just external factors.

In fact, others have debated whether the variability of orgasms in women may well be down to the female instinct of determining the best suited males to mate with.
