Smoking has become a debatable topic everywhere nowadays. And quite rightly so, as it is the leading cause of preventable diseases and deaths among people worldwide. A lot of research is going on to know exactly what influence the smoking behavior of people.
One study has been carried out at the Indiana University involving smoke-free air laws in four Texas communities. The lead researcher of the study, John Macy said, “Everyone knows it’s unhealthy to smoke. Our study suggests that the success of strong smoke-free air policies may be more about changing the social acceptability of smoking.” |
Details of this study
It was a telephone survey in which 407 adults participated in four cities. Their inputs were taken to compare perceived norms about smoking in two different cities that have strong smoke-free air laws and two other cities that have weak smoke-free air laws.
Researchers observed that adults living in cities with strong smoke-free air laws perceived a lower prevalence of smoking in their cities. They won’t even report that other people in their cities believed smoking is acceptable to them. They are always eager to report anything relating to smoking cessation in their cities

This study has helped explain smoking behavior of people in general. The governments in different countries come up with new smoke-free air policies from time to time to get rid of this habit. |
How to kick off smoking habit?
Smoking habit can be kicked off with the help of some effective drugs such as Champix, which is a prescription-only drug that helps reduce withdrawal symptoms as well as nicotine cravings. In addition, smokers also need support from their friends and family members in their fight against smoking.
Whatever be the causes behind smoking among people, this habit is certainly bad for health. On a pack of cigarette, you will always find a statutory warning, “Cigarette smoking is injurious to health.” Unfortunately, this warning is often neglected by smokers worldwide. |
