A rapid increase in the use of social networking sites has revolutionised the way in which we communicate, socialise and network, and now it can actually improve our health and help us to quit smoking.
This new finding has been born out of a recent case involving 33-year-old Michael Cover who claims that he was able to quit after over 30 years, thanks to help and support from his friends on Facebook. By announcing to his 500 contacts that he was going to kick the habit all together, he was able to use the reams of positive encouragement to spur him on.
The fact he had made it so public also made him even more determined, and he claims that the thought of failing and looking a fool was unbearable and it gave him the push he needed. Cover also claims that a number of additional factors had played an active role in his decision including regular chest pains and shortness of breath.
The story comes just weeks after reports emerged that smokers are far more likely to quit successfully with the help of a ‘smoking buddy’, which is essentially a fellow smoker who is also looking to stop.
