According to experts, the second wave of H1N1 infection is imminent. As a result, we are being told to take extra precutions and schools are set to close.
This coming Sunday will see 42,000 runners, preparing for the starting whistle at the New York City Marathon. However, in light of latest predictions that a new wave of H1N1 infection is set for America’s shores, organizers are taking precautions against the dreaded strain of the influenza virus.
Athletes will be provided with goody bags comprised of pain killers and energy bars, as well as anti bacterial hand washes, complete with the New York race logo.
Race officials have also advised participants to withdraw in the event they experience any of the symptoms that are associated with the H1N1 strain given that the level of physical exertion involved, will worsen symptoms. They would also need to consider the fact that the immune system is left weakened for up to 72 hours after a marathon.
Runners are advised to ensure they keep their hands clean during this window. In the event that you suspect you have been infected with the H1N1 virus, experts also recommend you cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. It is also imperitive that you dispose of the tissue.
