NHS calls for trans-fat ban

22/06/2010 0 Comments |

According to a BBC report, an NHS Watchdog is calling for a blanket ban on trans-fats from food here in the UK.

The artificial fats are often present in foods like biscuits, cakes and take-aways and are extremely damaging to our health. The official body; NICE are also looking to impose a reduction in salt levels and saturated fats in a bid to curb cardiovascular disease figures.

In addition to this, the report states that the British food industry has already set plans in motion for the promotion of healthier food processes.

To date, cardiovascular disease, which is made up of heart disease and stroke, is the leading cause of preventable deaths here in the UK and experts claim that 40,000 in 150,000 deaths could have been avoided.

Better advice

It’s evident that the UK and the Western World alike are in need of greater education concerning the dangers of cardiovascular disease and the Department of Health Spokesperson believes that reducing salt and saturated fats and banning trans-fats could well save the NHS £1bn.

Facing facts

To date, 1 in 4 of us is obese and it’s fair to say we are in the grip of a pandemic that we can reverse, provided we adopt the right lifestyle and take heed of advice. Anybody in need of nutritional advice is able to see their health care provider who can advise them as to their best course of action.
