When you think of Pele, you think of a winner. He’s a man fortunate enough to have the entire package – skill, finesse and masculinity and certainly not somebody you would expect to be heading a campaign for better education surrounding impotence.
Who would ever associate the world’s greatest ever footballer with impotence? This is the point he is trying to make though, in that the condition can occur in men of all ages at any time.
The main point he attempts to highlight during his campaign is that a large proportion of cases are treatable, provided men swallow their pride and break through taboos.
The Brazilian born footballer who scored 1,283 goals in 1,364 professional matches claims he has been fortunate enough not to have suffered with erectile dysfunction in his 61 years but Pfizer, the manufacturers behind the world’s largest selling impotence drug, Viagra have drafted him in to lead the campaign because he is such a recognised name.
Initial worries
When asked whether he had been apprehensive, Pele admitted he had been somewhat worried about the connotations of the condition. However, on meeting the directors of Pfizer in New York, he claims that he was won over by the fact so many men suffered with the condition but were unable to seek professional help because of embarrassment.
“I suppose they chose me because football is known all over the world, and so am I” said Pele who heads the initative at a time when 40% of the male population are suffering with impotence, either as a result of stress, anxiety or underlying conditions.
