Scientists say pornography may cause impotence

Excessive consumption of pornography may cause impotence, scientists from Italy have announced, after a trial involving 28,000 men.

The Italian Society of Andrology and Sexual Medicine found that many of the men were hooked on porn at an early age. This led to so-called “sexual anorexia” – a lack of interest in genuine sexual relations – by the time the men had reached their mid-twenties.

Too much porn caused a gradual loss of libido, and the notion that sex is totally divorced from real life relations, the experts said.

Carlo Foresta, head of the Society, said: "It starts with lower reactions to porn sites, then there is a general drop in libido and in the end it becomes impossible to get an erection.”

However, it was not all bad news. “With proper assistance recovery is possible within a few months,” according to Foresta.

Impotence, or erectile dysfunction, has numerous causes, some of which are physical. High blood pressure or atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries) can both result in a loss of erectile function.

Impotence also has psychological causes. Depression and anxiety are two mental health problems that have been linked to impotence.
