Smoking has been attributed to a number of serious health conditions including lung cancer. Smokers also run the risk of premature ageing. On top of this, it would appear that they also risk the chances of a cigarette blowing up in their face.

In what can only be described as an unfortunate, extraordinary event, Andi Susanto from India, is said to have suffered a dental injury as the result of his cigarette, doing just that. At a time when we are seeing a whole host of smoking cessation campaigns, Susanto is reported to have been given compensation worth 5m rupiah (£335).

In the grand scheme of things, this is clearly not much although PT Noiorono Tobacco, the manufacturer behind the rogue cigarette, claims that it has been in talks with Susanto’s family, about a possible out of court settlement.

Circumstances to be investigated

Local police are in the process of investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident although the company behind the cigarettes has said that there will be little need for a recall, given a lack of clinical evidence. They also claim they are currently awaiting the results of a series of tests.

To date, Indonesia has the largest population of smokers with 60% of the male population addicted to tobacco. We do not put any strange materials in the cigarettes, so we think that this is a weird case. “This is the first time for us" said “Iwan Sulistyo, a representative of the brand.

How does the UK compare?

It is true to say that the latest smoking ban, introduced here in the UK back in 2007, has served to reduce the number of smokers. However, we are still in need of further education concerning the dangers and importance of smoking cessation, given that the habit is a leading cause of preventable deaths.

It is possible to plan, implement and succeed with an effective smoking cessation plan, provide you seek medical advice beforehand.
