If reports are to be believed, the UK is currently benefiting from a ‘lucky break’ as the number of swine flu cases is said to have dropped. Expert, Sir Liam Donaldson has claimed that the second wave of the virus has begun. However, he also goes on to highlight the fact that figures would appear to suggest that the peak of the virus will be lower than experts had originally predicted.
According to records, there have been 18,000 new cases in the past 7 days. This is an increase, from 14,000 the previous week and 9,000 7 days before that. This is far lower than expected as it was believed that the number would double.
Donaldson also says: “We are well into the second wave of pandemic flu, having had the first wave in July but it's proving so far to be a slow burner.”-The Telegraph,09. He also communicates his opinion that the slowed rate of infection may allow for the faster development of a vaccine.
He does however reiterate the fact that although we may have had a ‘lucky break’ in terms of the rate of infection, every death is a person and not a statistic.
As always, we recommend you contact your health care provider in the event you experience any of the symptoms associated with the H1N1 virus.
