Horny Goat Weed: The New Viagra?

An Italian based team of researchers have reported that their studies on an ancient herb found in Chinese medicine, known commonly as “horny goat weed”, has show some serious promise and potential as a future source of treatment for erectile dysfunction, a market fiercely contested by the likes of Cialis and Viagra.. The study was focused around the herbs well known aphrodisiac properties, but the clinical team focused their study to find evidence that it could be quite beneficial to the resolution of erection problems within male patients.

Mario Dell’Agli, who headed up the research team, is due to present the findings of his study into the potential benefits offered to erectile dysfunction sufferers by horny goat weed to the ACS Journal of Natural Products, which is due for publication on October the 24th this year. One of the most important features of this report is that Dell’Agli has found this and other herbal ingredients to be as good as, if not better, than the current prescription options available such as Viagra at treating the condition, but without any of the common and sometimes unpleasant side effects.

During the study, scientists exposed a number of herbal substances to an enzyme which is known to control and regulate blood flow to a man’s penis. By inhibiting the effect of this enzyme it would be possible to keep the blood vessels leading to the penis of a patient dilated, resulting in a better erection that is easily sustainable as well as making it possible to induce an erection in patients who are unable to do so unassisted. Out of the herbal substances tested, horny goat weed was found to be a cut above the rest, inhibiting the enzyme as significantly as prescription products but with little or no side effects.
