UK may look to Taiwan as an example in the fight against obesity

Taiwan is currently suffering the effects of a large scale obesity problem and in direct response; the government there is pushing for a scheme that will see a fresh taxation on junk food such as fast food, alcohol and candy. The move comes shortly after the release of stats that appear to indicate that as much as 25% of the child population in Taiwan is obese.

The plan is also intended to encourage the purchase of healthier products such as fruit and vegetables. All proceeds are said to go to the health insurance services in Taiwan which have suffered in recent years. The government is yet to officially approve the move however, and officials have also failed to comment as yet.

Health experts here in the UK have begun to question whether our own efforts are lacking and taking into consideration the fact that we as a nation consumed 600 units of alcohol this Yule tide (41% more than last year) and the fact that 1 in 3 school children is obese is enough cause for concern for us to consider whether it is time to follow suit.

Anybody who is concerned about their weight is advised to seek the advice of a trained health practitioner.
