Viagra book and film on the way

Though sex among the older generations was once thought of as a slightly taboo subject, this changed when Viagra came onto the market just over a decade ago. So much so that one American author, Barbara Rose Brooker, decided to write a book about it – and there is also a Viagra movie on the way from Hollywood.

Brooker’s first book on the subject, entitled The Viagra Diaries, came out last year and told tales of life among the so-called Viagra generation, who are still seeking sexual thrills at an age when most of their ancestors would have been retiring from love making. Now Brooker is planning a sequel. The back cover of the original reads: “Is love possible for the Viagra generations?”

The success of Brooker’s first book and the fact that she felt encouraged to write a second are indicative of the recognition that Viagra has attained among popular culture fans. Around 99% of adults are aware of the drug and what it does, studies have shown. The impotence treatment has been the subject of documentaries and magazine articles and has been heralded by celebrities such as Hugh Hefner who last week called the drug “God’s little helper,” in the New York Times.

Tales of Viagra are not consigned to print, though, and later this year a blockbuster film will bring Viagra to the silver screen. Love and Other Drugs will star Jake Gyllenhall and Anne Hathaway and will be based on Jamie Reidy’s memoir Hard Sell: The Evolution Of A Viagra Salesman. The book detailed Reidy’s life as a rep for pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer in their golden years when Viagra was first taking off, recalling some of the scandalous ways that he got by in the industry while doing the minimum required amount of work. Early reviews of the movie suggest that it could be just as successful as the enormously popular book.
