What Surgery Is Available?
There are two main types of obesity surgery. The first is liposuction surgery and the second is gastric surgery. Liposuction is a procedure in which deposits of fat are removed to re-contour one or more areas of the body. Gastric surgery takes two forms: restrictive surgery and malabsorptive surgery.

Risks associated with surgery
As with any major surgery there is always a risk that something may go wrong. If you are considering surgery, your surgeon should outline all the risks to you before you agree to undergo the operation. Some risks include:
- Excessive surgical trauma
- Prolonged exposure to anaesthesia
- A result that does not meet expectations
- Disfigured skin irregularities and depressions
Side effects of obesity surgery
Surgery can cause side-effects, both in the short and long term. A patient is likely to suffer nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, heartburn and vitamin deficiency at the time of the operation. Worse still, several studies have shown that up to 20% of patients who have weight loss surgery require follow-up operations to correct complications. |
