What is Ramipril?

Ramipril, also known as Tritace, works to lower high blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels and reducing how hard the heart needs to contract to force blood into the arteries. It belongs to a group of medications known as ACE inhibitors, which work by stopping the body from naturally restricting blood vessels to control blood pressure.

What are the benefits of Ramipril?

Ramipril tablets are proven to help lower blood pressure, and as a result they are prescribed to many hypertensive patients. As well as helping to lower high blood pressure, Ramipril is also used to treat heart failure, prevent heart attacks and strokes and improve kidney problems associated with diabetes.

Usually you'll only need to take Ramipril tablets once a day, which makes this a convenient and easy way to lower high blood pressure.

How does it work?

Ramipril is known as an ACE inhibitor, which simply means that it stops an enzyme known as ACE from working properly. Usually ACE works to control the body's blood pressure by producing a compound called angiotensin II. This tightens blood vessels, forcing the heart to contract harder to push more blood around the body, which results in increased blood pressure.

Stopping ACE from fully working means that angiotensin II isn't produced, so the blood vessels don't tighten and the heart doesn't have to squeeze harder in order to pump blood sufficiently.

Instead, Ramipril tablets help the blood vessels to relax. This means that more blood can pass through the vessels more easily, and that the heart doesn't have to squeeze as hard to work properly. This helps to reduce blood pressure and makes the heart work more efficiently.

How do you take Ramipril tablets?

You will usually be told to take one dosage Ramipril tablets once a day, but in some cases patients are told to divide the dose and take two tablets each day.

You should divulge information about any medication you're using, as well as any existing medical conditions and medical history; because this can affect the dosage you'll be prescribed. If you suffer from kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes or a corrective tissue disease, you must tell your doctor.

In some cases you might not be able to take Ramipril tablets at all, for example if you're pregnant. That's because Ramipril has been found to cause injury or death to an unborn baby. As a result, you should use effective birth control once you start taking Ramipril.

Who can take Ramipril tablets?

Ramipril is suitable for patients who need to lower high blood pressure. There are some restrictions with regards to who can safely use Ramipril tablets. If you are pregnant, you won't be prescribed Ramipril because it can cause injury or death to your unborn baby. If you're on dialysis or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, heart disease, diabetes, a connective tissue disease or if you're taking lemisartan (Micardis) you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests to check if you can take Ramipril tablets safely. Ramipril can react with different medication, so make sure you tell your doctor if you're completing a course of medication before you begin your Ramipril prescription.

What are the side effects?

The majority of people who take Ramipril do not experience any negative side effects. It's not common for people to experience side effects when taking Ramipril tablets; however, the most commonly reported side effects include a dry mouth, thirst, fever, pale skin, confusion, jaundice and chest pain. More rare side effects include dizziness, nausea, vomiting or a spinning sensation, to name a few.

If you experience any signs of an allergic reaction - which range from hives to severe stomach pain, difficulty breathing and swelling - you should seek immediate medical assistance.
