What is Nexium?

Nexium tablets are used to decrease the production of stomach acid.

They are used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that causes inflammation and heartburn. They are also used in the treatment and prevention of bacteria-infected ulcers in the intestine or stomach, and stomach ulcers caused by long-term use of NSAIDs.

In addition, they are used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where a growth in the pancreas causes excessive stomach acid to be produced.

Nexium tablets contain esomeprazole magnesium, a proton pump inhibitor, which decreases stomach acid production.

This medicine is only available with a valid prescription from your doctor. You must not share your medicine and it should only be used to treat a diagnosed condition.

How does Nexium work?

Excessive stomach acid can lead to heartburn, indigestion and more serious complaints, such as stomach ulcers or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Nexium tablets contain the active ingredient esomeprazole, a type of medicine known as a proton pump inhibitor. The cells lining the stomach contain proton pumps, which work to produce stomach acid that is an essential part of the body's digestive process.

Esomeprazole inhibits the action of these proton pumps, lowering stomach acid production and reducing acid from flowing back into the food pipe (which causes GERD).

Used in combination with antibiotics, Nexium can help eradicate Helicobacter pylori bacteria from the gut, which helps peptic ulcers to heal and prevents them from recurring.

How to use Nexium

  • Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take according to your symptoms
  • Always take this medicine exactly as advised by your doctor
  • You can take Nexium tablets at any time of day, with food or on an empty stomach
  • Do not chew or crush your tablets
  • Swallow your tablets whole with a glass of water
  • If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, add them to a glass of still water and stir until they begin to break up. Drink this mixture either immediately or within 30 minutes.

What dosages are available for Nexium?

There are two dosages available for Nexium tablets: 20mg tablets containing 22.3mg of esomeprazole magnesium (equivalent to 20mg of esomeprazole) and 40mg tablets containing 44.5mg of esomeprazole magnesium (equivalent to 40mg of esomeprazole).

These tablets are only available by prescription from your doctor.

Nexium is also available under the brand name 'Nexium Control' to provide 24-hour relief from heartburn.

What are the side effects of Nexium?

Side effects that have been commonly reported include: wind/flatulence; gut disturbances, such as constipation; diarrhoea; nausea; abdominal pain; and, headache.

Less common side effects include: dizziness; drowsiness; pins and needles; dry mouth; peripheral oedema (swelling of the legs and ankles); skin reactions (hives or dermatitis); increased liver enzymes; or, difficulty sleeping.

If you are concerned about any side effects, consult your doctor.

What are the precautions/interactions of Nexium?

Nexium tablets may interact with some other medicines and you should tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you are taking any of the following: Erlotinib (for cancer); clopidogrel, atazanavir (for HIV infection); citalopram, clomipramine or imipramine (for depression); phenytoin (for epilepsy); diazepam; ketoconazole, voriconazole or itraconazole (for fungal infections); blood thinning medicines such as warfarin; cisapride (for heartburn and indigestion); cilostazol; digoxin (for heart problems); tacrolimus; methotrexate (chemotherapy medicine); rifampicin (for treatment of tuberculosis); or, the herbal remedy St John's wort, used as a treatment for depression.

If you are taking anti-HIV medicines, such as rilpivirine or nelfinavir, you should not take Nexium tablets. This is because the esomeprazole in the tablets decreases the level of these medicines in the blood, which could make them less effective against HIV infection.

Because Nexium tablets contain sucrose, you must not take them if you have sucrase-isomaltase insufficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or other rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance.

This medicine should be used with caution if you have severely decreased liver or kidney function, osteoporosis or a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Taking a proton pump inhibitor medicine for more than 3 months can cause blood levels of magnesium to fall, which can lead to muscle twitching, dizziness, fatigue and increased heart rate. If you experience any of these symptoms, tell your doctor, as they may need to monitor your magnesium levels.

Nexium tablets are only available on prescription from your doctor. They are only suitable for use in adults and children aged 12 years and over.

If you are pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy, you should consult your doctor before taking Nexium as their safety in pregnancy has not been established.

Nexium tablets should not be taken by breastfeeding mothers. It is not known if esomeprazole is excreted in breast milk, so the safety of this medicine while breastfeeding is uncertain.

You should not take Nexium tablets if you are allergic to esomeprazole, proton pump inhibitors or any of the other ingredients.
