What is Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor that is most often used (either on its own or in combination with other medications) to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

This condition causes stomach acid to flow back up the oesophagus, resulting in heartburn symptoms and potentially localised tissue damage.

Omeprazole can also be used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (as well as other conditions that cause excessive stomach acid production), frequent heartburn or stomach/intestinal ulcers.

It is also effective in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) from the gut when used in combination with an appropriate antibiotic.

This medication generally comes in the form of delayed-release capsules or tablets (which deliver the active ingredient directly into the intestine). Alternatively, it can be ingested in the form of delayed-release granules to be suspended in water.

Omeprazole 2.5mg, 10mg and 20mg can be purchased online without the need for a prescription. Higher dosages are available on prescription from your doctor.

Omeprazole is classified as a generic medicine. The active ingredient is present in a range of different brand-name medications, such as: 'Dexcel heartburn relief tablets', 'Losec capsules', 'Mepradec capsules', 'Mezzopram dispersible tablets' and 'Zanprol tablets'.

How does Omeprazole work?

Proton pumps are attached to cells in the stomach lining and are the mechanisms by which stomach acid is produced. As a proton pump inhibitor, Omeprazole prevents these mechanisms from producing stomach acid in the same amount.

This effect can help provide quick relief for the symptoms of conditions such as heartburn and indigestion, by preventing stomach acid from coming into contact with the soft tissue in your oesophagus and digestive tract. Long-term use can also enable your soft tissue damage in your digestive tract to heal.

Typical symptoms of GERD-related heartburn and indigestion include a burning sensation in the chest, bloating, nausea, vomiting and excessive belching.

Reducing the amount of acid in your stomach is also effective in the treatment of peptic ulcers (such as those associated with NSAIDs). This method helps protect tissue for long enough to enable the ulcer to heal to the extent that it is unlikely to return.

Another common use for Omeprazole is for the eradication of H. pylori bacteria. In these instances, this medication will be used alongside an appropriate antibiotic. Omeprazole creates a suitable environment in which the antibiotics will be more effective at killing any harmful bacteria.

Omeprazole should start alleviating the symptoms of indigestion and heartburn within a relatively short time frame (one hour to a few days).

However, a longer course with an adapted dosage is likely to be prescribed for the treatment of ulcers and eradication of H. pylori bacteria.

Your doctor may choose to recommend a course lasting anywhere from a few weeks up to a number of months depending on your symptoms.

How to use Omeprazole

  • The way in which you use Omeprazole will depend on the type and dosage of medication you are taking
  • Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist
  • Both gastro-resistant capsules and tablets should be swallowed whole alongside a drink of water or juice and should be taken 1 hour before a meal
  • Do not tamper with these capsules or tablets before taking them (e.g. by crushing, chewing or mixing them into food)
  • If taking the powder for oral suspension, make sure to mix it with water before use
  • Do this by pouring the powder into the relevant volume of water, stirring, waiting 2-3 minutes (until the liquid thickens), stirring again and consuming within 30 minutes
  • Should any powder remain stuck to the drinking vessel, pour in a small amount of additional water and consume immediately
  • The following amounts can be used as a rough guide for dissolving non-prescription Omeprazole: 2.5mg sachet/1 teaspoon of water (5ml); 10mg sachet/1 tablespoon of water (15ml)
  • Both the powder for oral suspension and capsule granules can be administered via a feeding tube if required following additional direction from your doctor
  • For non-prescription Omeprazole, the recommended dosage is generally 1-2 10mg tablets to be taken once per day (preferably 1 hour before breakfast) for approximately two weeks, or until symptoms go away (whichever occurs sooner)
  • Reduce this tablet to one tablet per day as your symptoms begin to ease and stop taking the tablets altogether when your symptoms subside
  • Should your heartburn or indigestion symptoms persist for longer than two weeks, consult with your doctor before continuing to administer self-treatment
  • For prescription Omeprazole, your doctor may recommend a higher dosage and/or frequency of administration
  • The standard treatment duration for the elimination of H. pylori bacteria is approximately 2 weeks, while the duration for the treatment of conditions associated with the production of excess stomach acid is normally 3 weeks or longer
  • Continue taking Omeprazole as prescribed by your doctor for the recommended treatment duration, even if your symptoms have improved
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember (unless it's almost time for the next dose, in which case you should skip the missed dose and take the next dose as normal)
  • Do not take two doses to compensate for a missed dose
  • If you believe you have taken too much Omeprazole, or are experiencing side effects that concern you, contact your doctor immediately
  • Store this medication in the container provided, tightly sealed and in a location not effected by excess heat, moisture or light
  • Always follow the instructions regarding safe disposal and do not flush this medication down the toilet

What dosages are available for Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is generally available in one of four different dosages; 2.5mg, 10mg, 20mg and 40mg. These figures denote the amount the active ingredient, omeprazole sodium.

The 2.5mg, 10mg and 20mg options can be purchased online without the need for a prescription. The 40mg dosage is prescription-only, but your doctor may also prescribe the 10mg option in certain circumstances.

This medication is most likely to take the form of gastro-resistant capsules (hard and regular). However, gastro-resistant tablets and powder for solution infusion may also be recommended.

What are the side effects of Omeprazole?

Omeprazole is a relatively safe medication, but medicines can affect people differently.

Side effects which have been commonly reported include: headaches; nausea; vomiting; constipation; and, flatulence. Speak with your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms becoming severe or persisting for an extended period.

Omeprazole also carries a slight risk of rarer yet more severe side effects, including: rashes; hives; itchy skin; swelling (generally of the face, throat, mouth, eyes, hands or feet); breathing difficulties; hoarseness; irregular or increased heartbeat; lethargy; dizziness/light-headedness; muscle spasms and shaking; stomach pain; diarrhoea; fever; and, seizures. Contact your doctor immediately if you spot any of these symptoms.

If taken for a protracted period of time, Omeprazole could also cause your stomach lining to weaken.

Taking Omeprazole at the same time as other proton pump inhibitors (such as lansoprazole) could marginally increase your risk of fracturing a bone, such as your wrist, hip or spinal vertebrae. This risk tends to increase for people prescribed high doses of this medication for more than one year.

What are the precautions/interactions of Omeprazole?

Make sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the medications you are currently taking (both prescription and over-the-counter or herbal remedies).

Also, notify your doctor if you are known to have an allergy to any of the ingredients contained within the following medications: omeprazole, esomeprazole, dexlansoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole or pantoprazole. If in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist to check the ingredients.

Your doctor is likely to recommend you avoid Omeprazole if you have already been prescribed rilpivirine.

Your doctor is likely to recommend you take a reduced dosage if you have: liver-related health issues; vitamin D/B12 deficiency; osteoporosis (or, are at a heightened risk of developing this condition); been prescribed a long-term course of corticosteroids; or have gone through the menopause.

Your doctor may also want to change your dosage or monitor you more closely if you are taking medications including: antibiotics such as ampicillin; anticoagulants such as warfarin; benzodiazepines such as diazepam; antifungal/anti-yeast medications such as voriconazole; diuretics; or, iron supplements.

This is also the case for the following medications: ketoconazole; atazanavir; clopidogrel; methotrexate; cilostazol; nelfinavir; cyclosporine; phenytoin; digoxin; saquinavir; disulfiram; and, tacrolimus.

Other key risk factors include having a low level of magnesium, being older or of Asian descent. If you are aged 50+, speak to your doctor before taking Omeprazole as you may stand a higher chance of developing brittle bones or a severe form of diarrhoea.

Omeprazole is not known to affect your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery. However, avoid such activities if you experience side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness.

You should avoid taking this medication if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.

This medication is believed to be safe for use by children, older adults and pregnant/breastfeeding mothers, but these groups should consult their doctor before using Omeprazole. If you become pregnant whilst taking this medication you should contact your doctor immediately.
