What is Pantoprazole?

Pantoprazole is a medication used to treat the symptoms of heartburn and belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. These medicines stop excess stomach acid from being produced, providing up to 24 hours' relief from symptoms.

Pantoprazole is used in the treatment of several conditions, including:

  • Peptic ulcers
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (where symptoms can include regurgitation of acid and heartburn)
  • Ulcers caused by long-term use of NSAIDs
  • Peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where an enlargement or tumour in the pancreas causes excess stomach acid to be produced

In the UK, you will often find Pantoprazole sold under the brand name Pantoloc Control. To treat ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori, Pantoprazole is generally prescribed along with antibiotics, to eradicate the bacteria.

How does Pantoprazole work?

The cells lining the stomach are home to proton pumps that produce stomach acid. Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor, which reduces the amount of stomach acid being produced.

Our stomachs naturally produce acid as part of the digestive process, and the duodenum and stomach linings are usually protected by an acid-resistant layer.

If excess stomach acid is produced, or if this protective layer is damaged in some way, this can result in a peptic ulcer forming on the duodenum or stomach lining.

In some cases, gastro-oesophageal reflux (where acid flows back into the food pipe) can cause heartburn and pain, damaging the oesophagus' lining.

Pantoprazole can be used to treat conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux and reflux oesophagitis by reducing the production of stomach acid.

Often, this medicine is prescribed in combination with NSAIDs to prevent the formation of peptic ulcers in those taking NSAIDs on a long-term basis, for conditions such as arthritis.

How to use Pantoprazole?

  • The normal dosage for heartburn is one 20mg tablet a day, for a maximum of 4 weeks.
  • For other conditions, your doctor will advise you how many tablets to take, how often and for how long. This will depend on the condition being treated and this advice will be printed on the dispensing label on your medicine packet.
  • Pantoprazole tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, one hour before a meal. Don't break, crush or chew them.
  • If symptoms don't improve after 2 weeks, you should seek medical advice from your doctor.

What dosages are available for Pantoprazole?

There are 2 dosages available for Pantoprazole tablets. Dosages available include 20mg and 40mg. Each 20mg tablet contains 20mg pantoprazole (as pantoprazole sodium sesquihydrate).

Pantoprazole is also available in a powder for solution for injection formula.

What are the side effects of Pantoprazole?

Although not everybody taking Pantoprazole will suffer from side effects, as medication can affect people differently, side effects which have been commonly reported include; headache; dizziness; constipation, diarrhoea, wind, abdominal pain; dry mouth; insomnia; feeling tired and/or generally unwell; rash and itching.

What are the precautions/interactions of Pantoprazole?

This medicine should be used with caution by those who have:

  • Osteoporosis or are at risk of developing it, as it can slightly increase the risk of breaking bones in your wrist, spine or hip
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency

There is a slightly increased risk of infections in the stomach, such as Campylobacter or Salmonella, when taking this medicine.

This medicine is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age, as insufficient data is available as to its efficacy and safety.

Adults and the elderly can safely take Pantoprazole, provided they are not allergic to any of its ingredients.
