More information about Dapagliflozin
Dapagliflozin, also sold under the brand names Forxiga and Farxiga, is an effective treatment for type 2 diabetes.
You should combine this medication with lifestyle changes; including a diabetes-friendly diet and regular exercise. Diabetes is a chronic condition that may last throughout your life, however, with proper treatment it can be reversed.
Dapagliflozin is also prescribed to treat heart failure and kidney disease. Currently, HealthExpress does not sell it for these conditions. Speak to your GP for more information.
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition that affects people of all ages and backgrounds. It is split into two categories defined by the function of your pancreas. Type-1 diabetes usually occurs in adolescence and is treated with daily insulin injections. Type-2 diabetes usually occurs later in life, is associated with a poor lifestyle, and is treated with medication that supplements the body’s natural insulin production.
Dapagliflozin is a sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. This sounds very complex, but it essentially means that it stops a protein in your kidney from working, so that you urinate more sugar, salt and water. With less of these substances in your body, your blood has less sugar and its volume is less, so it can be better pumped around the body. As a result, you will experience fewer symptoms of diabetes.
By lowering blood sugar, Dapagliflozin protects the vessels in your kidneys. Proper kidney function is necessary to cleanse your blood of toxins.
By reducing the volume of your blood, Dapagliflozin treats heart failure. This condition is where your heart is overworked, putting strain on its valves and the blood vessels that feed it.
Dapagliflozin is easy to take. However, if you have any uncertainty, contact your doctor for clarification.
The recommended dose is one 10mg tablet taken daily. You can take it at any time of the day, however, it is easiest to remember to take it in the morning. You may be prescribed 5mg, if you are a type-1 diabetic, along with your insulin.
Tablets can be taken with or without food. You should take them whole with a small amount of water.
You may also have to take additional medications alongside Dapagliflozin, for example, Metformin. You should follow the original prescribing doctor’s instructions if this is the case.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if there is less than 12 hours until your next dose, then skip the missed one and continue as normal.
Remember to maintain a healthy diet and exercise frequently. Dapagliflozin alone is not enough to treat diabetes.
The following are the most commonly reported side effects:
*Stop taking the treatment immediately if you experience this reaction. DKA is a condition that occurs when your body runs out of insulin. You will start to burn fat very quickly, producing ketones in the liver that make the blood acidic. Symptoms of this include excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea and vomiting.
These are not all the side effects - there are many more uncommon and rare reactions. For more information, consult the patient information leaflet or your doctor.
You should also be wary of allergic reactions. Symptoms of an allergic attack include shortness of breath, swelling and rashes. You should treat any signs as serious and seek medical attention.
You should tell your doctor about any other health concerns you have before using this treatment.
Do not use Dapagliflozin if you:
This medication can cause hypoglycemia (hypo). A hypo is where your blood sugar levels drop too low causing symptoms like fatigue, confusion and dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience this. A hypo is reversed by eating fast-acting carbohydrates - fruit juice is recommended.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant, inform your doctor. Dapagliflozin is dangerous if the active ingredient passes to your child.
As Dapagliflozin has a diuretic effect, you should be aware of the signs of dehydration, for example, headaches, dry mouth and fast heartbeat.
You can order prescription medications, including Dapagliflozin, online from HealthExpress. For chronic conditions, like diabetes, our doctors ask that you have an earlier prescription from your GP. If that is the case, you can complete a quick online consultation before purchasing your treatment.
The consultation is an opportunity for you to detail any health concerns you might have as well as list the medications you are taking (so the doctor can ensure there won’t be interactions).
