What is Chloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment?
Chloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment is used to treat bacterial eye infections (bacterial conjunctivitis). Its active ingredient, chloramphenicol, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that can both treat and suppress the infection.
Bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection of the outer surface of the eye. It is caused by a variety of bacteria and the infection results in redness, discomfort and discharge from the affected eye.
Eye ointment is an effective treatment for these types of infections as it is applied directly to the source of the infection. This means it works much faster than oral medicines.
The ointment contains chloramphenicol in a greasy semisolid form. When applied, your body temperature melts the ointment and breaks it into tiny drops. These drops stay within your eyelid and eyeball and stop the infection.
Applying a 1cm strip of ointment to the inside of the eyelid three to four times a day during this period should remove the infection.
How does Chloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment work?
This eye ointment contains the active ingredient chloramphenicol. This is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that treats a wide variety of bacteria.
Various forms of bacteria occur naturally in our bodies and do not cause harm. However, when these bacteria grow and multiply this causes an infection.
Chloramphenicol stops bacteria producing proteins that allow them to grow and replicate. After a few applications, the antibiotic completely controls the bacteria causing the infection.
The remaining bacteria then die or are killed by the body's immune system, therefore eliminating the infection.
Chloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment works by placing the antibiotic directly into the affected eye. This means it is much more potent and acts faster than oral medications.
Typically, Chloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment is used for five days. It is only suitable for ocular and external use.
Make sure to use Chloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment for the full five-day course, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you don't, the infection may not clear completely, and it may return.
Discard the tube after you've completed your five-day treatment to avoid contamination.
Chloramphenicol 1% Eye Ointment can be used in combination with eye drops. If you do so, use the drops during the day and the ointment just before going to bed.
