What is Eumovate Cream & Ointment?
Eumovate Cream and Ointment are topical (rub-on) medicines which are used to relieve dry, itchy, scaly skin conditions such as irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and atopic eczema. They are also used to treat the following conditions:
- Nappy rash
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Insect bite and sting reaction
- Otitis externa (inflammation of the outer ear canal)
- Photodermatitis (inflammation of the skin caused by UV light)
- Intertrigo (inflammation of the skin in folds or where skin rubs together)
The ointment has a stickier texture, whilst the cream is absorbed quickly into the skin. Both are designed to help the skin retain moisture, provide relief from itching and restore softness and smoothness.
The cream and ointment come in three sizes: 15g, 30g or 100g. Eumovate Cream and Ointment contains 0.05% w/w clobetasone butyrate, a moderately potent topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the skin.
How do Eumovate Cream & Ointment work?
Eumovate Cream and Ointment can be used in the treatment of dry, itchy, scaly skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis and eczema.
Lack of water in the outer skin cell layer (stratum corneum) can lead to cracked, itchy, scaly skin. Using hot water and soap can make dry skin worse by removing the natural oils on the skin's surface, drying it out.
Eumovate Cream and Ointment contain the active ingredient clobetasone butyrate. This is classed as a moderate strength corticosteroid and is used to reduce skin inflammation.
When the skin is irritated, or an allergic reaction occurs, it releases substances that cause inflammation. The result is widened blood vessels and red, itchy, swollen and painful skin.
Clobetasone acts on skin cells to prevent inflammatory substances from being released. This reduces the swelling, redness and itching and so helps prevent scratching that can further irritate the skin.
Eumovate Ointment has a greasier texture than the cream. It is most suitable for very scaly and dry areas of skin, whereas moist or weepy skin is best treated with the cream.
How to use Eumovate Cream & Ointment
- Apply the cream or ointment in a thin layer to the affected area(s) of skin once or twice a day
- Use the cream or ointment as directed by your doctor
- Wash your hands thoroughly after use
- The area(s) being treated should not be covered with airtight dressings or bandages as these can increase absorption and therefore also increase the risk of side effects
- Do not use the cream more often or for longer than your doctor advises you

There is only one dosage available for Eumovate Cream and Ointment. Both the cream and the ointment contain the active ingredient 0.05% w/w clobetasone butyrate. This is a topical corticosteroid which reduces inflammation.
Eumovate Cream is available in 15g, 30g or 100g tubes.

What are the side effects of Eumovate Cream & Ointment?
Eumovate Cream and Ointment are generally very well tolerated. Side effects are rare, but medicine can affect different people in different ways.
The most commonly reported side effects are allergic reaction, with symptoms such as burning, itching, skin redness and irritation. If this occurs, stop using the cream or ointment and consult your doctor.
Applying Eumovate for long periods of time, too often or excessively means it has more potential to cause some side effects associated with topical steroid use. These include excess hair growth, skin thinning and stretch marks.
What are the precautions/interactions of Eumovate Cream & Ointment?
Always tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicine, including any other corticosteroid medicines, before you use Eumovate.
If using other topical medicines on the skin, you should leave several minutes between applying them. This gives each product enough time to sink in and avoids them mixing on your skin.
If you are applying moisturiser, this should be used about 30 minutes before applying Eumovate. This can aid absorption of the corticosteroid. Applying moisturiser just before or after Eumovate has the potential to dilute the corticosteroid and make it less effective.
You should not apply Eumovate Cream and Ointment to open wounds or broken skin. It should not be used on skin affected by fungal skin infections (such as athlete's foot, ringworm or thrush); viral skin infections (such as herpes simplex, shingles, chickenpox or cold sores); acne; acne rosacea; bacterial skin infections such as impetigo; perioral dermatitis (a rash around the mouth); or, on itchy skin that is not associated with any other rash or inflammation.
Never use Eumovate Cream and Ointment if you are allergic to topical corticosteroids or any of the other ingredients.
Eumovate Cream and Ointment should never be used as a moisturiser.
Eumovate Cream and Ointment is suitable for use by children, adults and the elderly. However, you should talk to your doctor before using this cream to treat skin conditions in children under the age of 12.
You should only use this medicine while pregnant or breastfeeding if your doctor considers it essential, as its safety has not been established. Avoid applying it to the breasts immediately prior to a feed.
