What is Fucibet Cream?

Fucibet Cream is a topical cream that is prescribed for eczema and dermatitis infected with bacteria.

The cream contains 0.1% betamethasone, a potent topical corticosteroid, and fusidic acid Ph Eur. 2%, an antibiotic medicine. Betamethasone reduces inflammation, while the fusidic acid treats the infection.

Fucibet Cream is only available by prescription from your doctor and is classed as a potent corticosteroid cream. This means your doctor will normally only prescribe it if treatment with other, less potent steroid creams has failed.

How does Fucibet Cream work?

Fucibet Cream contains two active ingredients: betamethasone and fusidic acid.

Betamethasone is a topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, helping the skin to heal and easing symptoms such as redness and itching.

Fusidic acid is an antibiotic medicine used in the treatment of bacterial infections. The medicine works by interfering with the production of proteins vital for the bacterial cells to multiply. With the bacteria unable to grow in number, they are destroyed by the immune system or naturally die, treating the infection.

It is most commonly prescribed to treat eczema or dermatitis infected with bacteria.

Long-term usage of Fucibet Cream should be avoided.

How to use Fucibet Cream

  • Apply a thin layer of Fucibet Cream to the affected area(s) of skin once or twice a day, as directed by your doctor
  • Wash your hands after applying
  • Avoid getting the cream in your eyes, nose or mouth. If this occurs, rinse thoroughly with cold water.
  • It is not recommended to use this medicine for longer than 2 weeks as it contains an antimicrobial agent. Prolonged use can increase the chances or micro-organisms becoming resistant to the medicine.
  • If your infection does not start to clear within 7 days, consult your doctor

What dosages are available for Fucibet Cream?

There is only one dosage available for Fucibet Cream. The cream contains betamethasone 0.1% (a corticosteroid) and fusidic acid Ph. Eur. 2% (an antibiotic medicine). The cream is available by prescription and comes in a variety of sizes including 3g, 5g, 10g, 15g, 25g 30g or 60g tubes. The most frequent sizes are 15g, 30g and 60g tubes, which also might be more cost-effective depending on the source.

What are the side effects of Fucibet Cream?

Although side effects when using Fucibet Cream are unlikely, medicines can affect people differently. Side effects which have been commonly reported include; thinning of the skin (most common with prolonged or excessive use); itching or redness, skin irritation; allergic reaction; excessive hair growth; inflammation of the hair follicles.

If you are concerned about any side effects, stop using the medicine and speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

What are the precautions/interactions of Fucibet Cream?

This medicine is not known to interact with any other medicines. You should tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you are using.

If you are using other topical creams or ointments on the same area of skin, you should leave a few minutes between each application, to avoid products mixing on the skin.

Applying moisturiser before or after Fucibet Cream can dilute the active ingredients and make the medicine less effective. If using moisturiser, you should apply it at least 30 minutes before or after using Fucibet Cream.

You should not use this cream if you have:

  • Acne vulgaris or acne rosacea
  • Fungal skin infections, such as ringworm
  • Perioral dermatitis
  • Viral skin infections, such as chickenpox
  • Itchy skin around the anus or genitals
  • Plaque psoriasis
  • Skin rashes due to syphilis
  • Tuberculosis which affects the skin

Fucibet Cream is safe for use by children, adults and the elderly. However, it should be used in caution in children, and never used for long periods of time.

This medicine is not safe for use during pregnancy as it may harm your unborn baby. Your doctor will prescribe Fucibet Cream only if essential. It is not safe for use by breastfeeding mothers and you should consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using Fucibet Cream.

In rare cases, this medicine can cause a severe allergic reaction. If you are allergic to corticosteroids or any of the other ingredients, do not use this medicine.

If you experience a severe allergic reaction, seek urgent medical attention. For less serious reactions, stop using the medicine and consult your doctor or pharmacist.
