What is Glucophage SR?

Glucophage SR (slow release) is an FDA approved oral medication, taken in the form of a 500mg, 750mg or 1000mg tablet. It is used to treat and manage the symptoms of type 2 diabetes by helping to control blood sugar levels in individuals dealing with type 2 diabetes, or non-insulin dependant diabetes (NIDDM).

Glucophage tablets contains the active ingredient; metformin hydrochloride. This medication can be used by men and women over the age of 18, with type 2 diabetes to effectively manage their diabetes, when dieting has failed to do so. Glucophage SR tablets can be taken on their own, or in combination with other antidiabetic treatments.

What are the benefits of Glucophage SR?

As well as all the functions of Glucophage SR as an effective way to control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes, this medication has other useful advantages.

  • The active ingredient, metformin, is believed to lower LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) and increase the levels of HDL cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol), which means that you are more likely to lose weight. Despite this, it is still important to continue the diet and exercise advice given by your doctor.
  • Glucophage tablets are prolonged-release tablets, designed to release a slow dose of metformin continuously over several hours. Therefore, your blood sugar levels will be consistent throughout the day.
  • Clinical studies have shown that overweight type 2 diabetic patients will experience long-term intensive blood glucose control, as a result of using Glucophage SR.
  • By using Glucophage SR to control high blood sugar, you can prevent potential kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems.
  • Long-term control of diabetes can decrease the potential risk of heart attacks and strokes.
  • Studies have shown that Glucophage SR tablets can make menstrual cycles more regular and can increase fertility.

How does Glucophage SR work?

The active ingredient in Glucophage SR, metformin hydrochloride, is known as a biguanide medication and works in a variety of ways to effectively control sugar levels in the blood to ensure that diabetes symptoms are treated and prevented.

Glucophage SR is clinically recognised to decrease the amount of sugar produced by cells in the liver. It also increases the sensitivity of your muscle cells to insulin, so that they can remove the natural glucose from your blood more effectively. Another way that it works is by delaying the absorption of sugar from the intestines into the blood prior to eating. This means that it reduces sugar levels both between meals and directly after them. As it is a slow release formula, it means a more steady dose is released through the day.

How to use Glucophage SR

Unlike Glucophage sachets, Glucophage SR comes in tablet form, so is a convenient and practical way of treating type 2 diabetes. It is currently available from HealthExpress in dosages of 500mg, 750mg and 1,000mg.

In general, the prescribed dosage will depend on a number of things, particularly how well your body regulates blood sugar levels. The starting dose will usually be 500mg but this may be increased upon consultation with a doctor. The tablets should be taken once or twice daily and should be taken either during or immediately after meals. Remember, never crush, break or chew the medication and do not take a double dose, even if you have forgotten to take a tablet.
