Obesity rates highest in the West Midlands

According to government statistics, people from the East Midlands are the ‘fattest’ in the UK. The powerful message has transpired from a detailed poll, carried out here in the UK.

The study found that as a region, the East Midlands has an average body mass index (BMI) of 28.9, in accordance with weight and height ratios. Scotland comes in a cool second, with the average Scot having a BMI of 28.4. Surprisingly enough, Londoners came off best, with an average BMI of 26.1.

What could we take from this?

Anybody with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is regarded as overweight. In addition to this, anybody with BMI levels that range from 30-39.9 is clinically obese. Whilst the average BMI is just under the obese bracket in the Midlands, it is close enough as to validate an immediate need for action, both in terms of education from official bodies, and proactive action from people.

Dr Ian Campbell, a doctor and obesity expert claims that high BMI levels in the Midlands would indicate that the population there runs a higher risk of contracting diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

He also adds that cities are plagued with higher obesity rates in comparison with more rural areas. Much of the South East and the North East had levels of 26.9, placing them at par with London.

Worrying figures

The West Midlands were said to be suffering levels as high as 28.1 which further supports the idea that the vast majority of Britain is borderline overweight.

These figures are only set to rise and as Ian Campbell states, we must do something and quickly. Whilst obesity treatments such as Xenical and Reductil have proven to be highly effective, it is recommended that you seek medical advice before beginning any course of treatment.
