What Can Quitting Alcohol Do For Your Sex Life?

Published : Wednesday January 6, 2016 | Posted in : Sexual Health

Dry January - woo! I won't get drenched on the school run. Oh, it actually means giving up alcohol? Oh dear. Not quite the same thing.

So why should you give up alcohol for January? SEX! That's why!

Does Alcohol Affect Sex?

Yes, sir. Alcohol reduces sensitivity and that makes an orgasm more difficult. If orgasms are mostly in the mind it's no surprise that when we're fuddled with drink we can't get there - its much the same as how we can't feel our teeth and fail to notice we're walking through sick.

What About Men?

Alcohol reduces male sensitively too, and drinking to excess can cause 'brewers droop', more scientifically known as erectile dysfunction.

Too much alcohol in the bloodstream decreases the ability to sense stimulation. It also affects the nervous system which is important for arousal. Alcohol interferes with blood flow. A penis needs a good blood flow to maintain its erection. Without good blood flow you're dead in the water.

Here's something you may not be aware of. Drinking alcohol affects the efficiency of erectile dysfunction medication. So if you thought a pint of Dutch courage would help move things along, it really won't.

And Women?

As well as reducing sensitivity, alcohol leads to lubrication problems and can interfere with conception too. Not to mention really a bad 'horizontal-tango' partner choice. Oh lord, cringe. How can I escape without waking him when my head might fall off and I can't find my shoes? (They're in front of the toilet).

Alcohol and Obesity

Alcohol is stuffed full of calories, but it doesn't have to say so on the bottle. They mount up and stick to your arse, stomach and arms not to mention your internal organs too.

Obesity leads to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, erectile dysfunction (that again), general unfitness and bad health.

Alcohol and STIs

Excess drinking can lead to lapses in safe sex. Beer dresses us in a superhero outfit. We think we're bomb-proof, but it's a mirage. You may think you're Superman with his pants on the outside, but in fact you just have your pants on and are about to contract chlamydia, herpes or HIV. Cutting down on alcohol can help you make safe sex choices.

Save Cash

There's no arguing with the fact that alcohol is expensive. If you cut back you'll notice more cash in your account at the end of the month. If like me you spend £20 a week on red wine, that's £80 a month. If you want to improve your sex life you could spend that on lube, lingerie and sex toys - or maybe a meal out somewhere that isn't Pizza Hut again.

Better Overall Health

Quitting alcohol can help you sleep better, improve your skin, help you lose weight and boost your spirits. All this leads to a healthier, happier and sexier you. Just what your sex life has been calling out for!

So why not give up or cut down on your drinking this January to see what happens? There's nothing to lose other than a crap sex life and extra weight. Last year over 2 million people cut down their drinking for January so you'll be in good company - it's a team sport if you think about it.
