Are robots really the future of sex tourism?

People have all kinds of different sexual preferences and the sex industry tends to cater to them all, including sex with robots. Although it might sound like something from a sci-fi novel, but men actually do pay, up to 10000 Euros to have sex with a life like sex bot in Amsterdam. This may seem like a novelty, but some experts believe that this may be the future of sex tourism, based on the fact that it would make STIs less likely to spread, in an industry where it’s not always easy to control.

According to the researchers from Victoria University in New Zealand in 2050 sex tourism in Amsterdam may have a very different face, with more and more people becoming ‘beauty-fixated’ and the worrying spread of serious sexually transmitted infections. It’s believed that having android sex workers will also lower the occurrence of sex trafficking.

These future androids will also, apparently be made of bacteria resistant fibres and sanitised after use to ensure that there is no risk of STIs spreading and it will also make people feel less guilty, compared to having intercourse with a real person.

Although it makes me happy to think that a sex industry filled with android will prevent the exploitation of those who are vulnerable in society and also reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections, I still can’t help but think that this isn’t the way it’s going to go.

However, for a moment, consider the issues associated with a future like this. Would men and women actually prefer to have sex with a robot compared to a real person? Granted, some of us might find it enticing, but it’s not different really from using a sex toy. So in that respects, I see the concept of sexual intercourse with robots as a potentially popular future novelty, rather than a full blown replacement for the sex industry. Also, would it be considered infidelity if a man or women did have sex with an android? Well, maybe not, as once again it’s the same as using a sex toy but then some relationships crumble because of pornography and other sexual indulgences, so android prostitution could cause the same issues.

As for the spread of sexually transmitted infections, yes, it might be helpful in avoiding it, but is a sex industry with robots ever really going to be so popular that it’s all that will be on offer? STIs will always be a problem. It might be possible for these sex robots to be regulated more stringently, but there will s be those elements within the industry that will try to cut corners.

Frankly I find the thought of sexual intercourse with androids terrifying and I know many other people that do, but it’s not always clear which direction the future will move. Ideally I’d like to see a future where sex trafficking doesn’t exist and hardly anybody has an STI, but I don’t think that will happen and I somehow don’t think that android prostitution will help.
