Aciclovir 5% Cream is an antiviral cream under the classification of antiviral medications known as synthetic nucleoside analogues. The cream is used in the treatment of genital herpes and cold sores. In the UK, you may also find it under the name 'Zovirax'.
Aciclovir 5% Cream is used to decrease symptoms, whilst speeding up the healing process.
It should be used during outbreaks of genital herpes, caused by the herpes virus, where sores form around the rectum and genitals. It can also be used to treat cold sores on the lips or face.
The cream can be used by adults and the elderly, but should not be used by children.
Aciclovir 5% Cream is an antiviral agent that attacks the Type 1 and Type 2 herpes simplex virus, responsible for genital herpes and cold sores.
The cream is activated inside the infected cells, blocking a viral enzyme known as DNA Polymerase (this enzyme is needed by the virus in order for it to multiply and survive).
The herpes virus is incurable, but highly manageable. The medicine doesn't kill the virus, but prevents it from multiplying and infecting more of the body's cells. It does not prevent further outbreaks, cure genital herpes or cold sores, or prevent the condition from spreading to other people.
There is only one dosage commonly available for Aciclovir 5% Cream. The cream contains 50mg of Aciclovir. This has been tested to be the maximum effectiveness to combat forms of genital herpes and cold sores.
This medicine may occasionally cause side effects including flaky or peeling skin; dry, cracked lips; burning or tingling sensation on the skin; redness or irritation around the affected area.
Rare side effects could include contact dermatitis; flushing of the skin; hives or rash; allergic reaction.
