What is Bendroflumethiazide?
Bendroflumethiazide, also known as Aprinox, belongs to a group of medicines known as diuretics, which are often referred to as 'water tablets'. Bendroflumethiazide tablets are used to treat high blood pressure, but also work to reduce water retention.
Bendroflumethiazide tablets work by removing excess water from the body by increasing how often you pass water. This is because it acts on the kidneys urging them to draw water from blood, thus reducing fluid volume and pressure exercised within blood vessels. This is incredibly helpful in reducing the heart's workload and therefore can be beneficial to people who suffer from high blood pressure.
What are the benefits of Bendroflumethiazide?
Bendroflumethiazide is a clinically proven treatment for lowering high blood pressure, but is also sometimes used to help reduce water retention. Normally only a single daily tablet is sufficient to manage blood pressure, but sometimes this medication can be prescribed alongside other hypertension medications for a more intensive course of treatment.
How does it work?
Bendroflumethiazide tablets belong to a group of medications known as thiazide diuretics. These are sometimes called 'water tablets', because they reduce the amount of water retained in the body by encouraging you to pass water more often.
Bendroflumethiazide tablets adjust the way in which salt and water is transported across certain cells in the kidneys. This action results in an increased level of bodily salts in the kidneys, which automatically draws more water from blood. This reduces fluid levels within blood vessels. These Bendroflumethiazide tablets also cause the blood vessels to dilate. The combination of these two actions means that there is less fluid being pumped around the body in blood vessels that have become wider, reducing the pressure in the heart.
Although these tablets may increase a person's desire to pass water, their influence is weak, so people don't notice it.
How do you take Bendroflumethiazide?
You should take Bendroflumethiazide tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usually these Bendroflumethiazide tablets are taken with water first thing in the morning.
You will usually be prescribed the smaller dose of Bendroflumethiazide 2.5mg tablets to begin with. Your doctor will increase the prescription to Bendroflumethiazide 5mg or 10mg tablets if you don't notice any effects with the smaller dosage. The maximum dosage of Bendroflumethiazide tablets that our doctors can prescribe is currently 10mg.
If you forget to take your Bendroflumethiazide tablets, you should take one as soon as you remember and continue your treatment as usual the next morning. Don't take a double dose to make up for forgetting a pill.
Who can take it?
Bendroflumethiazide is suitable for hypertensive patients who need to lower their high blood pressure. When completing an online consultation with our doctors, you should divulge any information about existing medical conditions and medication you're taking, as this could mean you need to take a different dosage or a different medication altogether. You must inform our doctor if you're pregnant, trying to conceive or breast feeding; if you have liver or kidney problems; if you suffer from gout or diabetes; if you have an adrenal gland disorder; if you have low blood potassium, sodium or high blood calcium; and if you have problems passing water.
What are the side effects?
When taking Bendroflumethiazide tablets, the vast majority of people do not experience any negative side effects. However, there is a risk when taking any medication that you could experience negative side effects. However, a few people have reported experiencing side effects including thirst, muscle cramps, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, impotence and high blood glucose when taking Bendroflumethiazide.
