What is Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream?
Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream is prescribed to treat fungal infections of the foot such as athlete's foot and sweat rash in skin folds due to candida albicans infection (candidal intertrigo).
Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream contains clotrimazole (an antifungal) and hydrocortisone (a corticosteroid). Together these ingredients reduce inflammation, while killing fungi and clearing the infection. This relieves associated symptoms such as skin irritation and itching.
This cream is only suitable for use in adults and children aged 10 years and over. It must not be used in children under 10 years of age unless under medical supervision.
How does Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream work?
Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream contains two ingredients that have a complementary effect.
The cream contains clotrimazole, an antifungal that treats infection by yeasts and fungi. It works by interfering with the cell membranes of fungi. Fungi produce a substance called ergosterol and clotrimazole prevents its production, causing holes in the cell membrane. Essential parts of the cells leak out and toxic substances enter, killing the fungi.
Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream also contains hydrocortisone, a topical corticosteroid that provides relief from inflammation. This ingredient prevents cells in the skin from producing inflammatory substances as a reaction to skin irritation. This stops skin from becoming red, swollen and itchy, and provides relief from itchiness and the itch-scratch cycle.
Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream contains a mild corticosteroid and is generally prescribed to treat fungal infections such as athlete's foot and sweat rash.
You should always use this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor and should not share it with anyone else, even if they have similar symptoms.
Do not use this cream to treat large areas of skin or on broken skin.
