How does Daktarin Cream Miconazole Nitrate 2% work?
Daktarin Cream Miconazole Nitrate 2% is an antifungal medicine that destroys the yeast and fungi responsible for causing a range of fungal infections.
Fungal infections often occur in dark, hot and damp areas of the body where fungus can thrive. However, infection can easily be spread to other areas of the body through your hands or contaminated items such as towels or clothing.
These microorganisms that cause the infection are typically from a group known as 'dermatophytes', but there are a number of other fungi and yeast that can cause these infections.
The cream contains the active ingredient miconazole, which kills the fungi and yeasts by disrupting their cell membranes.
Ergosterol is an essential part of all fungal cell membranes. It stops unwanted elements from entering the cells and prevents the contents of the cell from leaking out.
Miconazole stops the production of ergosterol and consequently makes holes appear in the cell membrane. This means that the contents of the cells leak out, killing the fungi and treating the infection.
Miconazole also has some antibacterial properties; these can be helpful as fungal infections are often accompanied by a secondary bacterial infection.
Daktarin Cream Miconazole Nitrate 2% can be used to treat several different areas of the body. These include the hands and feet, scalp, outer ear, trunk and groin.
It can take between 2-6 weeks for your fungal infection to clear up completely. However, this does depend on how severe or widespread the infection is. Nail infections usually take much longer to clear and, in some cases, can take over six months.
If your fungal infection does not get better after two weeks of treatment, you should consult your doctor.
