What is Testogel?

Testogel is used for testosterone replacement therapy in men with hypogonadism (low or no natural testosterone production).

Testogel contains the active ingredient testosterone. It is the main hormone responsible for development and growth of male sex organs and sexual characteristics.

Testogel is suitable for adults and elderly men. It is not to be used in children and has not been clinically evaluated for use in adolescents under 18 years of age.

You should not use Testogel if you have a known allergy to testosterone or any of the other ingredients. If you think you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using this medicine immediately and inform your doctor or pharmacist.

Because this medicine is for men only, pregnant women should avoid contact with application sites on a man's skin. Testosterone can be absorbed through the skin and could have adverse effects on the unborn baby. If you are pregnant and you come into contact with the gel, you should wash the affected area with soap and water as soon as you can.

This medicine is only available by prescription from your doctor.

How does Testogel work?

Testosterone is an androgen that is naturally produced by the testicles. The body's testosterone production is controlled by gonadotrophins, hormones released by the pituitary gland (in the brain).

As adults, testosterone is essential for several bodily functions including sex drive, sperm production, potency of erections and prostate gland functioning. It also has a number of other important functions in the body.

Low testosterone levels can cause impotence, decreased sex drive, infertility, osteoporosis and fatigue. Natural levels of testosterone decrease with age and can drop rapidly following testicular cancer surgery or other diseases. Testosterone replacement therapy can help.

Testogel contains the active ingredient testosterone. This is the same as the naturally occurring testosterone in the body and can be used to help relieve symptoms of low testosterone levels.

When applied to the skin, the testosterone is absorbed into the bloodstream.

Care should be taken to avoid transferring the gel to others through skin contact.

How to use Testogel

  • You should apply Testogel yourself as if anybody helps you, the testosterone could be absorbed through their skin
  • Apply the gel once a day, ideally in the morning after showering or bathing
  • Ensure your skin is clean and dry
  • Apply a thin layer of gel to the abdomen, shoulders or upper arms
  • Do not apply to the genitals as irritation may occur
  • Wash your hands with soap and water after applying
  • Allow the gel to dry for a few minutes before dressing

What dosages are available for Testogel?

There is only one dosage available for Testogel. This medicine contains 50mg of testosterone per 5g sachet.

You can buy sachets in single doses or packs of 30, 60 or 90 sachets.

Testogel is only available on prescription from your doctor.

What are the side effects of Testogel?

There are several reported side effects of Testogel, including: skin reactions; itching and flushing; prostate problems; nausea and vomiting; mood changes; sex drive changes; decreased sperm count; weight gain; and, male pattern hair loss.

If you experience a persistent, painful erection while using Testogel, you should tell your doctor immediately. If you experience these side effects, or any others, seek medical advice from your doctor.

What are the precautions/interactions of Testogel?

If you are taking coumarin anticoagulants like phenindione, nicoumalone and warfarin, your doctor may need to monitor your blood clotting time (INR) more frequently, as testosterone can increase the medicine's anti-blood-clotting effects.

There may be a greater risk of swelling and fluid retention if you are taking corticosteroids such as dexamethasone at the same time as testosterone.

After starting treatment with this medicine, diabetics may need to have their dose of antidiabetic tablets or insulin reduced.

Don't use Testogel if you have prostate cancer or male breast cancer, a history of primary liver cancer, hypercalcaemia (high levels of calcium in your blood) or nephrosis (a kidney disorder).

Testogel should also be used with caution in individuals with epilepsy or migraines as it may affect these conditions.
