Diprosone Cream is used to relieve redness, swelling, itching and discomfort associated with psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions, such as irritant and allergic contact dermatitis, atopic eczema and seborrhoeic dermatitis.
It can also be used to relieve the symptoms of erythroderma, lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and prurigo nodularis.
Diprosone Cream contains the active ingredient betamethasone dipropionate. This is a potent topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation.
Inflammation in the skin is caused by irritation or an allergic reaction. The skin reacts by releasing substances that widen blood vessels. This results in red, itchy, painful skin.
Diprosone Cream contains betamethasone dipropionate. This is a type of medicine known as a corticosteroid.
Betamethasone is a potent topical corticosteroid which means it may be prescribed by your doctor if your skin condition has not responded to less potent corticosteroids.
The betamethasone in Diprosone Cream stops the skin cells from releasing inflammatory substances. This reduces skin redness and itching and helps to break the itch-scratch cycle that can lead to further irritation.
Diprosone Cream is suitable for use on weeping and moist skin.
Always use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor.
Consult your doctor if your skin has shown no improvement after 2 weeks of using this cream.
There is only one dosage available for Diprosone Cream. The cream contains betamethasone dipropionate 0.064% w/w (equivalent to 0.05% betamethasone).
Diprosone Cream is available only on prescription from your doctor. The cream comes in 15g, 30g, 50g or 100g tubes.
Diprosone Ointment is also available and is most suitable for scaly, dry areas of skin.
Although side effects are rare when using Diprosone Cream, topical corticosteroid use has the potential to cause any of the following side effects: skin irritation such as redness, burning or contact dermatitis; skin thinning; stretch marks; excessive hair growth; telangiectasia (where fine blood vessels become prominent); and, acne.
Rarely, if used for long periods of time and excessively, the body may absorb enough corticosteroid for side effects to affect other parts of the body, resulting in Cushing's syndrome for example.
If you are concerned about any side effects you have experienced, consult your doctor.
You should tell your doctor if you have any existing medical conditions, particularly if you are affected by Cushing's syndrome, liver failure, hyperglycaemia, diabetes, perioral dermatitis, or skin infection close to the area to be treated.
This cream should not be used if you have perioral dermatitis, acne or rosacea.
Do not use this cream on your face for more than 5 days.
If you have been using Diprosone Cream for some time and your skin has improved, it is important you do not suddenly stop using it. This could cause redness, itching and burning. If this happens, speak to your doctor; they will help you to reduce how often you apply the cream until you can stop using it altogether.
This cream is suitable for use by adults and children over 12 years of age.
If you are pregnant you should not use Diprosone Cream without consulting your doctor. As this medicine's ingredients could potentially pass into breast milk, you should not use it while breastfeeding unless recommended by your doctor.
If your doctor prescribes you this cream while pregnant or breastfeeding, you should avoid using it on large areas of skin or for a prolonged period of time, in order to minimise steroid absorption.
