What is the Paludrine/Avloclor Travel Pack?

The Paludrine/Avloclor antimalarial travel pack contains two different types of malaria tablets, which can protect you from mild forms of the disease while you travel abroad. These tablets are available in doses of 100mg and 250mg. They work in various ways, by preventing the parasite from spreading in your bloodstream, preventing it from infecting your organs, such as your liver; and by destroying the parasite's defences so your body can kill them. This travel pack can be used by men and women over the age of 18 when travelling abroad.

How does Paludrine/Avloclor work?

Avloclor contains the active ingredient chloroquine phosphate which works by attacking the malaria parasite inside the red blood cells. It affects the parasite's defence mechanism so that eventually the haemoglobin in the cell destroys it.

The other treatment Paludrine contains the active ingredient proguanil hydrochloride which prevents the parasite from spreading from one red blood cell to another; a full malaria attack can only happen once enough blood cells have been infected.

Both of these treatments are provided to increase the chances of avoiding or treating a malaria (malaria prophylaxis) and is mostly prescribed to those with no immunity at all to infection (prophylaxis)

Avoiding mosquito bites

To increase the efficacy of this antimalarial pack it is also essential that you are aware of how to reduce the chance of being bitten by a mosquito whilst travelling, the following points can provide some guidance on how this can be achieved.

  • Wear long sleeved clothing and trousers that are brightly coloured after sunset
  • Use mosquito and insect repellant on parts of your body not covered
  • Ensure where you are sleeping has an effective screen/net to prevent any mosquitoes entering.
  • Ensure you use an effective mosquito spray to kill any mosquitoes you may experience

If you are bitten it is essential you take the treatments as soon as possible and seek medical help.

What are the benefits of using Paludrine/Avloclor?

Paludrine/Avloclor can provide effective protection against malaria parasites that aren't resistant to chloroquine. It's most suitable in lower risk areas, such as India, where the most dangerous parasites are not present. Because these are milder medicines, it's also less likely to cause fewer side effects.

Paludrine/Avloclor is a dual action treatment that stops the parasites from spreading while attacking their defences so that they can be killed, preventing a full malaria attack from occurring.

How to use Paludrine/Avloclor?

You should start taking these medicines one week (seven days) before you intend on travelling and continue taking them up until the fourth week of your return.

During this period you should:

  • Take two Avloclor tablets once a week, on the same day each week.
  • Take two Paludrine tablets daily, at the same time each day after food.
  • Ensure you use this antimalarial treatment pack at least 4 weeks after you leave the infested area.[1]

What if I forget to take my Paludrine tablets?

  • Ensure you take your Paludrine tablets as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose then skip the missed dose, never take more than the recommended daily dosage (double dose).

What if I forget to take my Avloclor tablets?

  • Take your Avloclor dose as soon as you remember
  • Carry on using your Avloclor dosage as normal after seven days
  • Use the Avloclor tablets from the new day of the week each week.

What dosages are available for Paludrine/Avloclor?

The Paludrine/Avloclor tablets are only available in a 100mg / 250mg dosage. This has been clinically tested to be the most effective dosages for the treatments whilst reducing the likelihood of side effects.

What are the side effects of Paludrine/Avloclor?

Although it is unlikely that you'll experience side effects, they may occur in people who are more sensitive to the active ingredients contained in these two medications. The most common potential side effects include:

  • Headaches
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Stomach upsets
  • Swelling of lips or tongue
  • Itchy rash

These can mostly be prevented by taking the medication after food and usually tend to pass as soon as your body has become used to the medication. There are certain rare side effects that could occur although these are very uncommon, they include:

  • Mood changes
  • Changes in hair colour
  • Blurred eyesight
  • Double vision
  • Reduced number of blood cell

If any of these occur or persist, or if you experience anything more bothersome, it's best to speak to a doctor straight away.

Precautions/interactions when taking Paludrine/Avloclor?

Most people over the age of 18 can use the medications in this travel pack and although it is also suitable for children, it is only available to buy by those over the age of 18 online. There are however some precautions that should be carefully considered before using these treatments.

  • Paludrine/Avloclor shouldn't be taken if you are dealing with liver disease, kidney disease, diabetes, severe gut disorders, or porphyrias (rare hereditary blood disorder).
  • Use Paludrine/Avloclor with caution during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
  • Paludrine/Avloclor may affect certain types of medications, so mention.
  • This treatment pack shouldn't be used if you have a history of epilepsy.
  • Should not be used if allergic to any of the active ingredients proguanil hydrochloride or chloroquine phosphate.
  • It is advised to tell your doctor if you are using Praziquantel, digoxin, cyclosporine or anticonvulsant medications as Avloclor can increase their effect and therefore increase the chance of side effects.
  • Medication such as warfarin, kaolin, cimetidine and antacids also react with Avloclor and could increase the risk of adverse effects.
