What are the benefits of taking this contraceptive?
Triphasic oral contraceptives prevent pregnancy with three different doses. This allows the amount of hormones taken to rise and lower, depending on which stage of your menstrual cycle you are experiencing. Because it adapts to your natural cycle, the chance of you experiencing side effects such as bleeding, spotting, mood swings and missed periods (amenorrhea) is significantly reduced.
Trinovum provides immediate contraceptive cover if you take it on the first day of your cycle. Because it's a combined contraceptive, Trinovum can also help to reduce period pains and make your periods more regular. It's also used as a treatment for endometriosis, a common problem where womb cells grow outside of the womb on other cells.
How does it work?
Trinovum uses two synthetic hormones, ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and norethisterone (progestogen) to influence your body's natural cycles. This is because it supplements your body with the hormone levels released during and after ovulation, so that your body thinks it has already occurred and that an egg has already been released. The womb lining is also prevented from thickening, so should an egg be released, it won’t be able to embed itself. As an additional measure, the hormones prevent semen from entering the womb by thickening the cervical fluid.
Who can take it?
Most women over the age of 18 can use Trinovum for contraceptive cover. It is, however, important to mention any medications or past medical conditions during your consultation as there are certain conditions or medications that may make it unsafe for you to take Trinovum. These include diabetes, migraines, depression, obesity, blood clotting, gallstones and kidney, liver or heart problems.
It's important to note that Trinovum should not be used if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, you should use a mini-pill such as Cerazette or Femulen.
How do you take it?
Trinovum is triphasic, which means that you take pills containing different doses of the active ingredients at different times in your cycle. You must take these pills in order that is suggested on the packaging. Trinovum is a 21 day pill, which means that there is a seven day break between 21 day strips. You will still be completely protected for those seven days.
For immediate cover you should start taking this contraceptive on the first day of your period. You start by taking seven white tablets containing 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 0.5 milligrams norethisterone, followed by seven light peach tablets containing 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 0.75 milligrams norethisterone. And you finish the course with seven darker peach tablets containing 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 1 milligram norethisterone.
Are there any side effects?
Before you find your ideal contraceptive pill you may have to try out the different variants of oral contraceptives available. Trinovum is very well tolerated because it provides the right amount of hormones at the right point in your cycle. Some of the minor side effects you may experience include headaches, nausea and breast tenderness. If they persist or you experience any more severe side effects, you may be advised to try a different contraceptive.
