More information about Fluomizin

What is Fluomizin?

Fluomizin is an antiseptic treatment for bacterial vaginosis (BV). It targets the bacteria responsible for the infection, killing it so that your body can more quickly recover.

One tablet (10mg) should be inserted into the vagina every night, for 6 nights straight. You should complete the course even if symptoms disappear.

Fluomizin is often prescribed as an alternative if other medications (such as Dalacin) prove ineffective. If you are unsure what treatment is right for you, consult a doctor before ordering.

How does Fluomizin work?

Bacterial vaginosis is a condition characterized by an infection of the vagina.

A woman’s vagina needs a delicate balance of bacteria, including the good bacteria lactobacilli. When there is a loss of lactobacilli and a growth of other harmful bacteria, symptoms like discharge and irritation will occur.

Fluomizin contains the active substance dequalinium chloride - an antiseptic and anti-infective. It works by attacking the negative bacteria cells, weakening the cell walls and preventing them from creating vital enzymes. This combined effect kills the bacteria and helps your vagina restore a natural balance.

As an antiseptic, Fluomizin differs from antibiotic treatments Dalacin (clindamycin) and Metronidazole. It will only treat conditions at their source. For BV, this means treatment should be inserted directly into the vagina.

How do I use Fluomizin?

If you are ever unsure about instructions, speak to a medical professional.

You should not exceed the recommended course - one 10mg tablet nightly for six nights. If you find there is no change to your symptoms after completing a course, contact your doctor.

To use Fluomizin:

  • you should insert one tablet in the evenings before sleep
  • wash your hands before using treatment
  • lie on your back with your knees bent
  • insert a single tablet deep into your vagina
  • if your vagina is dry, you may need to wet the tablet when inserting

If you find your symptoms improve before the end of the course, do not stop using the tablets. The infection can return if a course is not completed.

Do not insert more tablets than advised - this will not make them more effective and will increase the chance of side effects.

If you forget to take a tablet, do not take extra. Instead, continue taking them as normal and extend the course by a day. If you miss more than one dose, contact your doctor.

If you are due to have your period when using Fluomizin, you should wait for menstruation to finish before inserting the next tablet.

Do not clean the inside of your vagina or use any vaginal douche devices - this will lead to more vaginal infections.

What are the possible side effects of Fluomizin?

All medications pose certain side effects. It is unlikely you will experience a bad reaction with a medication, however, it is always a possibility. You can reduce the chance of one occurring by taking treatment as per your doctor’s instructions.

The common side effects of Fluomizin are:

  • increased risk of infection - especially yeast infections (thrush)
  • vulvovaginal disorders (including vaginal discharge, itching and burning)

Less common reactions include:

  • headache
  • nausea
  • vaginal bleeding

You should report all reactions to your doctor as soon as you notice them - this includes those not listed above or in the patient information leaflet.

If you experience an allergic reaction when using this medication, inform your doctor ASAP.

Who can use it?

You should ask your doctor for another treatment if you:

  • are allergic to any ingredients in this medication*
  • have ulcers in your vagina or cervix
  • have ever had a bad reaction to an antiseptic before

*A full list of ingredients are included in the patient information leaflet.

What precautions should I take?

Before ordering Fluomizin, you will be asked to complete a quick online consultation. It only takes a few minutes and allows our doctors to assess your health. You should detail all conditions you have (e.g. cystitis) and medications you are taking.

If you have your period during a course of Fluomizin, do not insert a tablet when you are bleeding heavily. Wait until the bleeding has stopped before inserting another tablet.

There is no data available on the interaction with non-latex condoms and intravaginal devices, so the use of these are not recommended for at least 12 hours following the treatment. This treatment is not known to affect the efficacy of latex condoms.

You should not have unprotected sex until a course of treatment has been completed.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with your doctor before starting this treatment.
