More information about Dalacin Cream

What is Dalacin Cream?

Dalacin Cream is a topical treatment used to combat moderate to severe bacterial infections, most commonly bacterial vaginosis.

When used to treat bacterial vaginosis, you will administer doses with an applicator. This is a plunger-type device that is inserted into the vagina.

A course of treatment usually lasts between three and seven consecutive days. It is important that you always complete the course your doctor advises.

Please note, this treatment has been known to damage latex condoms and diaphragms.

How does it work?

Dalacin Cream contains the active ingredient clindamycin phosphate. As an antibiotic, clindamycin prevents the bacteria that cause bacterial vaginosis from multiplying.

This is achieved by inhibiting the bacteria’s ability to produce the essential proteins needed for growth and replication. Your immune system can then more easily clear the infection.

You must continue to use this treatment for the recommended duration of the course, even if your symptoms improve.

How do I use Dalacin Cream?

You should always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has advised.

Full instructions (and diagrams) will be detailed in the patient leaflet. If you have any questions, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Dalacin Cream requires the use of an applicator. When full, the applicator contains approximately 5 grams (one dose).

A summary of how to use this treatment follows:

  • wash your hands before handling treatment
  • you should insert one dose into the vagina, every night before bed, for up to seven consecutive nights
  • remove the cap from the tube and attach one of the disposable applicators
  • squeeze gently to fill applicator
  • lie on your back, and insert the applicator into your vagina
  • press the plunger until the dose is delivered
  • throw away the disposable applicator
  • wash your hands after application
  • if you forget a dose, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose

What are the possible side effects?

The following are the most commonly reported side effects with vaginal application of Dalacin:

  • constipation
  • diarrhoea
  • dizziness
  • gastrointestinal discomfort
  • headache
  • increased risk of infection
  • nausea
  • vertigo
  • vomiting
  • vulvovaginal irritation

There are different reactions more common for other methods of administration (oral, topical, etc.). If you wish to know these, please consult the patient leaflet.

If you suffer diarrhoea with Dalacin, or if any other symptoms are severe or long-lasting, please stop using it and inform your doctor.

If you believe you are suffering an allergic reaction, stop treatment and seek immediate medical advice.

Please note, with vaginal use, this treatment has been known to damage latex condoms and diaphragms.

What precautions should I take with this treatment?

You should visit your doctor once you have completed the course, so they can check whether the infection has cleared.

It is also important that you inform your doctor if you experience diarrhoea.

Do not use a tampon with this cream as it may absorb the medicine. Instead, consider using a pad or sanitary towel.

You should avoid sexual intercourse when using Dalacin Cream, as this can make treatment less effective.

Please note, this treatment contains oil that has been known to damage latex condoms and diaphragms.
