More information about Aldara

What is Aldara?

Aldara (imiquimod) is a cream that is most commonly used to treat genital warts. It acts as an immune response modifier (IRM), which means it works with the immune system to stimulate the body's natural defence mechanisms. The cream is designed for topical use for the treatment of external genital warts and can be used in patients over the age of 12. When buying prescription medication such as Aldara online in the UK, you must be over 18.

What are the additional benefits of using Aldara?

"

When used correctly, Aldara cream can lead to a variety of benefits.

  • The cream typically clears the outbreak completely within weeks.
  • It can educe the pain or discomfort associated with genital warts by the 2nd week.
  • Low maintenance medication applied just three times per week.
  • Easy to apply solution.
  • Very well tolerated as the treatment is applied directly to the area, not ingested into your system.

Aldara cream is MHRA-approved, which means you can be sure you are using a safe and effective treatment. Aldara is also suitable for many with sensitive skin as it stimulates your immune system and doesn't have a toxic effect on the digestive system, unlike other wart treatments.

As well as these benefits, Aldara 5% cream has also been proven to be effective when treating other skin-related problems such as superficial basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis.

"

How does Aldara work?

Aldara contains the active ingredient imiquimod, which acts by stimulating the natural defence mechanisms of the body. Scientists believe that the imiquimod binds to the immune cells present in skin and causes them to release defence chemicals known as cytokines.

Cytokines help the immune system to fight viral infections by preventing the multiplication of viruses in cells. They also help to stop malignant or abnormal cells from increasing. As genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), Aldara (imiquimod) stimulates the body's immune system to target the HPV virus directly, treating the genital warts directly.

Who can take Aldara?

There are some people who should buy Aldara (imiquimod) cream with caution as it may cause adverse reactions or simply not work effectively. These groups of people include those who:

  • Have had an organ transplant.
  • Have auto-immune conditions or a weakened immune system.
  • Have inflammatory skin conditions.

Uncircumcised men who have warts on or under the foreskin may also need to seek alternative treatment.

This medication is not suitable for children. It is also not safe for adults who are allergic to any of the ingredients in the cream. If the genital warts are inside the genitals or anus, this medication should not be used, as Aldara (imiquimod) cream is meant for external genital warts only.

How do I use Aldara?

Aldara (imiquimod) cream is currently only available in a 250 mg, 12-sachet dosage, and is most effective if it is applied three times per week to the external genital warts.

  • It should be applied in a thin layer to the infected area and rubbed in until you can no longer see the cream.
  • This should be done before falling asleep and washed off after six to ten hours with mild soap and water, and then dried thoroughly.
  • It is important to wash your hands before and after you apply the cream.

You should continue the treatment until the warts have cleared and for no longer than 16 weeks. Do not apply the cream to broken or wounded skin, and make sure that you only apply it in a thin layer. If any symptoms of genital warts persist after 16 weeks, contact your doctor for further information.

Other uses for Aldara

Although the primary use and purpose of prescription for Aldara is for the treatment of external genital warts, it is also said to provide a useful action against certain skin conditions including:

  • Actinic Keratosis - Aldara (imiquimod) cream is clinically proven to help reduce the prevalence of nonhyperkeratotic and nonhypertrophic actinic keratoses on the face or scalp of adults.
  • Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma - It is also indicated for the topical treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC) with a tumour diameter of no more than 2.0 cm, located externally excluding the hands or feet. It is only used for this purpose when prior surgical methods have not proved sufficient in treating the condition.

What are the side effects of Aldara (imiquimod)?

Aldara is a prescription medication and as such contains a small risk of adverse side effects. If these do occur they are likely to be mild and could involve:

  • Mild irritation of the skin such as itching and burning
  • Flu-like symptoms such as fever, body aches or chills
  • A stuffy nose, sneezing or a sore throat
  • Headaches, back ache or muscle pain
  • Nausea or diarrhoea
  • Skin redness or scabbing

These are usually not common and tend to be either very manageable, or disappear quickly.

There is a very small possibility of more serious side effects. If you feel you are experiencing any of the following, you should consult a doctor as a matter of urgency; any kind of allergic reaction including hives or rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips or throat; chest pain or an irregular heartbeat; vaginal pain or swelling; blistering, bleeding, severe irritation or pain at the application site.

As you continue to use the cream, your body should be accustomed to it, on the other hand if side effects persist, then you should contact a qualified healthcare provider for advice.

What precautions should I take with Aldara (imiquimod)?

There are a number of precautions you should consider before you decide whether to buy Aldara cream. These include:

  • Aldara cream may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions. It is therefore important to mention your allergies to a doctor before buying Aldara.
  • This treatment can make you more sensitive to sunlight. Prolonged exposure to the sun should therefore be avoided.
  • It is vital that sexual contact is avoided whilst the cream is on. Protection (such as condoms) should still be used.
  • Aldara should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. This should be discussed with a doctor prior to placing an order for the treatment.
  • Although there is no definitive evidence, it is suggested that Aldara is used with caution in women who are currently breastfeeding.
