Cilest is a combined contraceptive pill that can provide almost 100% protection against conception. Containing ethinylestradiol and norgestimate, this effective contraceptive pill mimics the naturally occuring hormones oestrogen and progesterone, which makes the body think ovulation has occurred, preventing the release of an egg. As a combined pill, it is taken everyday for 21 days with a 7 day break.

Cilest is a highly effective oral contraceptive (the pill) that can provide you with almost 100% protection against pregnancy. As with other combined contraceptives, Cilest provides you with immediate protection when taken on the first day of your period, which makes it one of the most convenient methods of contraception available. It may also help alleviate pain and discomfort for women who often have heavy and painful periods. Some women also take hormonal treatments, such as Cilest, to treat acne.
Cilest pills have two active ingredients, norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol, which work to 'convince' the body that ovulation has already taken place. Due to this, no egg is released for fertilisation. This medication also causes changes in the cervical mucous, which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the womb. Cilest pills also prevent the lining in the womb from thickening so that an egg can attach itself and grow.
Cilest allows you to enjoy sex with your partner without either of you having to worry about taking additional measures to ensure you are protected against pregnancy (although it is recommended to also use a barrier contraceptive to prevent the risk of sexually transmitted infections). Apart from its primary benefit, it provides other additional benefit such as:
Cilest pills should be taken at the same time every day for 21 days of your menstrual cycle, followed by a seven-day rest period. You may experience bleeding similar to that of your regular period during this time, which is perfectly natural. Even though you are not taking your contraceptive during these seven days, you will still be protected from becoming pregnant.
For immediate protection, you should start taking your first Cilest pill on the very first day of your period. If this isn't possible, you can start taking it up until the fifth day of your period. However, you'll have to use an additional barrier contraceptive for seven days, until Cilest has taken effect. You can take Cilest with or without food or water.
You doctor will be able to clarify any instructions for the use of Cilest should you require.
There is one dosage available with Cilest: 35 mcg ethinyl estradiol and 0.25 mg of norgestimate. There are 21 pills per pack, which will last a month, including your required 7-day break. This dosage has been specifically formulated to maintain efficacy whilst minimising side effects.
If you happen to forget to take your pill at the normal time, take is as soon as your remember. However, if you find that you've missed it by 24 hours or more, it is advised to follow the following protocol:
For more information about what to do if you've missed your dosage for a significant period, it's always best to speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
As it is a prescription treatment, there is a small chance of developing certain side effects when using Cilest. Side effects usually tend to be very mild and will pass completely if you stop using the treatment. The most common effects include:
Some women also report weight gain when taking Cilest although this is also unlikely. If you do find that you experience side effects after taking Cilest, you might be advised to use a different contraceptive pill, with a different dosage of norgestimate and ethinylestradiol. You should mention any side effects you have experienced previously while taking the pill during your consultation, to help our doctor recommend a daily contraceptive that may be more suitable for you.
Women using Cilest pills for the first time may experience menstrual irregularities, such as spotting, breakthrough bleeding, or missed periods. You should talk to your GP if any breakthrough bleeding persists.
If you're thinking about coming off Cilest, then it's always advised to speak to your doctor. Some things that you might experience once you stop taking a contraceptive pill such as this one include:
Acne – Hormonal contraceptive pills can often keep bad skin under control, so once you're no longer taking it, your pimples may return.
Breasts – You may experience a reduction in breast size. They might also become less tender to the touch.
Libido – Some women find their sex drive increases after coming off contraceptive medication.
Mood – You may experience mood-swings, but on the other hand you may not experience them at all. It varies from person to person, and from pill to pill, so it's difficult to give a definitive answer.
Cilest can be ordered online by women above the age of 18, who are seeking a daily contraception solution, and who aren't already pregnant or breastfeeding. You would not be advised to take this birth control pill if you have had problems with your circulation, heart, liver or problems with hypertension. Make sure to mention any past or present health conditions or medications you are taking in your consultation.
If you would like more information about the side effects, precautions or interactions associated with Cilest, please be sure to read the helpful patient leaflet, which is available for download towards the bottom of this page.
Cilest is not suitable for use whilst pregnant, so please talk to your doctor about alternatives.
