Dianette FAQs

What is Dianette?

Dianette is primarily an effective combined oral contraceptive said to be over 99% effective at protecting against pregnancy when used properly . This pill also features as a popular treatment for women suffering from severe acne and hirsutism (excessive facial hair) as well as providing contraceptive cover.

Like most oral contraceptive treatments, Dianette can provide you with immediate protection if taken on the first day of your menstrual cycle (period). Dianette can also provide relief from menstrual cramps. Some women have also found it helpful in regulating their menstrual period.

How does Dianette work?

How the contraceptive pill works will depend on what you are taking it for, whether this is to prevent pregnancy, to reduce acne and improve skin, or to control hirsutism.

For contraception

This oral contraceptive prevents pregnancy in three ways :

  • Firstly, it prevents ovulation from occurring, so no egg gets released for potential fertilisation
  • Secondly, it increases the thickness of the mucus in the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to navigate through the cervix.
  • Thirdly, it prevents the thickening of the womb lining so that an egg cannot grow.
Without oral contraceptives With oral contraceptives Released egg Fallopian tube Ovary Endometrium
(uterus lining)
Cervix UTERUS VAGINA Oestrogen and progestogen can prevent an egg from being released from the ovaries each month most of the time. Progestogen causes thinning of the endometrium (uterus lining) so, if an egg is released, it cannot implant on the wall. Lastly, progestogen also thickens the mucus in the cervix so sperm is prevented from reaching the egg.

For acne

One of the active ingredients in Dianette - cyproterone acetate, works as an anti-androgen. Androgens are usually seen as male hormones as they promote the growth of hair and skin, if there are excessive amounts in a woman then it can cause her sebaceous glands to produce more oil (sebum) than normal, resulting in acne. This ingredient counteracts that action, effectively clearing the appearance of mild to severe acne from the skin.

For hirsutism

Women with a hypersensitivity to the androgen hormone can find that they produce excessive facial hair or body hair. Because of the active cyproterone acetate ingredient preventing the overproduction of the androgen hormone, this pill reduces the amount of sebum produced, thereby reducing the overall amount of excessive facial or body hair growth leaving the user with better skin within a few months.

What dosage is Dianette?

Dianette is a combined contraceptive pill and therefore only available in one dosage. Like all combined contraceptives, Dianette contains two active ingredients; this is 35mcg of ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and 2mg of cyproterone acetate (progesterone), both designed to limit the chances of unplanned pregnancy.

How can I take Dianette?

Dianette is a 21-day monophasic pill; this means that you take a pill for 21 days of your menstrual cycle and then leave seven days when you will not take any Dianette pills. During these 7 days, you will still be protected against pregnancy. This contraceptive comes in calendar packs to help you track when to take your pill and when to stop. You should try and take Dianette at the same time each day, with or without food, so that you reduce the chance of you forgetting to take it.

If not taken on the first day of your period, use condoms for the following seven days. Take each pill around the same time every day for maximum effectiveness. Many women set an alarm to remember their next dose. Each Dianette pill can be easily swallowed with or without drink and food. Store away from direct sunlight and under the temperature of 25°C. Double check the expiry date and patient leaflet regarding use and missed pill if unsure.

Use our interactive tool below on what to do if you miss one or multiple pills in one month (menstrual cycle). Simply click to begin.

How many pills have you missed? How late?
  • One pill less than
    12 hours late
  • Started a new pill pack less than 12 hours late
  • One pill more than
    12 hours late
  • Started a new pill pack more than 12 hours late
  • Two or more pills in one pack
  • One menstrual cycle = 28 days

*Vomiting and diarrhoea experienced within four hours of taking the pill is also classed as a missed pill.

*There are more than seven pills left in the pack. Continue to finish the pack, overlapping the seven-day break. Take your seven-day break and start your new pack as usual.

*There are fewer than seven pills left in the pack. Continue to finish the pack, overlapping the seven-day break. Start the new pack immediately after the old one is finished (missing out the seven-day break completely).

*If you have missed contraceptive pills in the first one to nine days of the pill pack and have had sex without barrier contraception, you could be pregnant. If you have calculated this between one to five days after the unprotected sex, you could use emergency contraception such as the IUD or morning-after pill. If not, continue your contraception until the seven-day break. If you don't have any bleeding, it is advised to take a pregnancy test and/or consult your doctor.

What side effects are normally associated with Dianette?

Like most medications, there is a risk of side effects when using prescription medication such as Dianette. However, Dianette pills are generally well tolerated, and side effects are very rare, and if they do occur, they tend to be very mild. The most common side effects are changes in menstrual bleeding, menstrual spotting, headaches and upset stomach.

Less common side effects tend to be nausea, breast tenderness, weight fluctuations, decreased libido, gallstones and increased blood pressure.

Dianette pills have been known to sometimes affect your mood by causing mood swings or depression, in the rare case that depression does occur, it is important that you notify somebody close to you if you start experiencing any lasting behavioural changes.

What Dianette interactions/precautions should I be aware of?

Women over the age of 18 can order Dianette pills online for use if they require effective contraceptive cover but are also suffering from severe acne or hirsutism. Dianette pills are not suitable for use by all women and certain conditions may prevent the use of this contraceptive, in particular women who have a prior history of blood clots of diseases involving the blood. Other limitations that may prevent use include women who:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are allergic to any of the active ingredients in Dianette
  • have heart or liver problems
  • have had a stroke
  • have high blood pressure
  • have high cholesterol or diabetes
  • are over the age of 35
  • suffer from unexplained bleeding
  • suffer from severe migraines
  • smoke and/or are overweight

If you suffer from any other medical condition or you are taking any type of supplements or medication, make sure to mention this in your consultation. Dianette slightly increases the risk of thrombosis (blood clot) therefore it is essential that you are aware of the symptoms for this, they include loss of breath, slurred speech, increased pain in the chest of legs, blurry vision or dizziness. Speak to your doctor immediately if you feel the Dianette pill may be affecting you negatively as a more suitable alternative may be available.
