More information about Malarone

What is Malarone?

Malarone is a combined treatment that can protect you from being infected by malaria, including the deadly plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite. Malarone is taken in the form of a 100mg / 250mg tablet. It contains two active ingredients, proguanil hydrochloride and atovaquone, which work by preventing plasmodium falciparum from multiplying in the body, and killing it before it reaches the liver. As a preventative treatment, Malarone should be taken once a day before, during and after your trip.

How does Malarone work?

Malarone contains proguanil hydrochloride and atovaquone, which work together to affect enzymes within the malaria parasite that help it multiply within the body.

This stops the parasite from spreading and causing the symptoms of the disease. This then allows your body's immune system to contain the virus to eventually kill it. The treatment is especially useful against the P. falciparum parasite as this particular pathogen is resistant to certain antimalarials.

What are the benefits of taking Malarone?

Malarone can provide protection against malaria parasites in just a single daily dose. It has also been proven to be effective at stopping even the most dangerous form of infection in areas where the parasite has become chloroquine resistant, which includes most of Africa and South America. When compared to other malaria tablets, Malarone doesn't have to be taken for as long and is less likely to cause side effects if used correctly.

How to use Malarone?

Malarone tablets are available to buy from HealthExpress in a 100 mg / 250 mg dosage. It is recommended that you:

  • Take one Malarone tablet once a day for two days before your trip
  • Use the treatment daily throughout your entire stay
  • Eating and drinking a milky drink can allow the treatment to be more effective, as it is absorbed faster into the bloodstream
  • Continue taking Malarone for at least 7 days after you return

Prolonged treatment with Malarone is not recommended, so let your doctor know if your holiday is going to last for more than 28 days.

Avoiding mosquito bites

To increase the efficacy of Malarone, it is also essential that you are aware of how to reduce the chance of being bitten by a mosquito whilst travelling. The following steps can provide some guidance on how this can be achieved...

  • Wear long sleeved clothing and trousers that are brightly coloured after sunset
  • Use mosquito and insect repellent on parts of your body not covered
  • Ensure where you are sleeping has an effective screen/net to prevent any mosquitoes entering
  • Ensure you use an effective mosquito spray to kill any mosquitoes you may experience

If you are bitten it is essential you take the treatments as soon as possible and seek medical help. Ensure you store Malarone in a cool area away from moisture.

What precautions/interactions should I be aware of when using Malarone?

Most people (male and female) aged 18 and over can buy Malarone online, although it can be used by children also. However, when buying online, it is only available for purchase by those over the age of 18. If you would like further information, read the patient leaflet regarding restrictions especially due to body weight (those under 40kg).

As with most prescription medication, there are certain conditions or instances that may prevent the use of Malarone tablets, these are detailed below.

  • It is recommended that you do not take Malarone during pregnancy, or if you are breastfeeding
  • Malarone shouldn't be taken if you have severe kidney disease, or if you weigh less than 40kg
  • Malarone should also be avoided if you are allergic to any of the active ingredients in the pills
  • Certain medication such as metoclopramide, tetracycline, etoposide and rifampicin may all affect the efficacy of Malarone

Ensure you mention during your online consultation if you are taking or planning on taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, as they may affect how Malarone works.

What are the side effects of Malarone?

Although Malarone is mostly well tolerated, some people may be more sensitive to the active ingredients in this medication than others. Some of the most common potential side effects include headaches and nausea, itching and swollen lips or mouth. However, taking it with food or a milky drink will make it less likely that you'll experience these effects.

The more uncommon or rare side effects include hepatitis, cholestasis, vasculitis, hallucinations, vasculitis, panic attacks and hair loss. These are very unlikely and occur in a very small minority of users.

If any of these side effects do persist or you experience any particularly serious or bothersome side effects, speak to a doctor straight away. You should also contact your doctor immediately if you start noticing any malaria symptoms while on this medication.
