What is Mounjaro?

How it works
The active ingredient in Mounjaro is Tirzepatide, which works on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. It reduces how much you eat and increases how much energy you use. You feel fuller for longer which means you eat less.
Dual action
Most weight loss injections are only GLP-1 receptor agonists. However, Mounjaro combines the effects of both GLP-1 and GIP. GIP has been shown to reduce how much you eat and increase how much energy you use. It has been shown to cause more weight loss than medicines that work on GLP-1 alone.

How to use Mounjaro
Choose
Choose an injection site.
You can inject this medicine into your stomach, thighs, or the back of your upper arms.
You can inject in the same area each week, but change the spot slightly each time.
Prepare
Choose a new pen needle. Put the capped needle onto the pen and twist it on until it is secure.
To prime the pen, turn the dose knob until you hear 2 clicks and the extended line is shown in the dose window.
Apply
Turn the dose knob until a ‘1’ icon appears in the dose window.Insert the needle into your skin and push the dose knob in until it stops, then slowly count to 5 while holding the dose knob.
Before removing the needle, make sure the ‘0’ icon appears in the dose window.

Mounjaro dosages
Mounjaro is taken once a week as an injection. The dose is gradually increased to help your body adjust and reduce the risk of side effects. You can continue dosing up until you reach the dose that works best for you.

Switching to Mounjaro
Which is better, Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Both are highly effective treatments for weight loss. However, research shows Mounjaro is slightly more effective. A clinical trial found that after 72 weeks, patients lost over 20% of their weight on Mounjaro, compared to just under 14% by those on Wegovy⁴.
Can I switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro?
Yes, if you are currently taking Wegovy, you can switch to Mounjaro. You can choose a similar dose or start again on the lowest dose of Mounjaro. You must wait at least 7 days after your last dose of Wegovy before starting Mounjaro.
What dose do I take?
You can switch to the equivalent dose or go up to the next dose of Mounjaro. For example, if you are on the second dose of Wegovy (0.5 mg), you can switch to the equivalent dose (2.5 mg) or go up to the higher dose (5 mg) of Mounjaro. Taking Mounjaro
Does it hurt to inject Mounjaro?
You should experience little to no pain if you inject Mounjaro correctly. It should feel like a small pinching sensation as the needle goes into the skin. However, you may experience an injection site reaction after you use Mounjaro, such as redness, swelling or itching. Make sure you rotate the injection spot each time and clean it before injecting to limit skin reactions.
What are the side effects?
Like all prescription medicines, Mounjaro can cause some side effects, although not everyone gets them. Common side effects include diarrhoea, dizziness, feeling sick and stomach discomfort. These common side effects should go away on their own after your body gets used to the medicine. If your side effects do continue, you may need to stay on your current dose a bit longer. If you experience any serious side effects, such as severe abdominal pain, stop taking it.
How quickly does Mounjaro work?
You should start to notice a change in your appetite within the first week. In terms of weight loss, you should notice you have lost at least 5% of your body weight in weeks 5-8. You should expect significant results after 72 weeks, losing up to 20% of your body weight⁴.
When do I stop taking Mounjaro?
You can usually continue using Mounjaro at the maintenance dose until you have reached your goal weight and feel confident enough to stop using it, unless your BMI goes below 20. This allows you to continue developing your lifestyle habits at your new weight, ensuring ultimate success as you transition from treatment.

Can I drink alcohol on Mounjaro?
Yes, but in moderation. Alcohol can make side effects like nausea worse and slow down digestion. Alcohol can also damage your weight loss efforts, as it is high in calories and sugar with little nutritional value.
How much water should I drink on Mounjaro?
A good target is around 2 litres daily. Staying hydrated supports digestion, prevents constipation, and reduces side effects. Herbal teas, diluted squash, or sparkling water all count.
Can I exercise on Mounjaro?
Yes — in fact, it’s recommended. Exercise not only boosts weight loss but also helps preserve muscle mass and improve mood. If you’re new to exercise, start small: brisk walking, swimming, yoga, or light weights. As you feel stronger, you can build up gradually
