What is Azithromycin?

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that treats and cures bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, non-specific urethritis, ureaplasma and mycoplasma in both men and women. It prevents infections from spreading by affecting the bacteria's ability to make proteins. Azithromycin stays in the system for a longer period compared to most other antibiotic medications, so courses of this medicine are short and less intensive. Azithromycin can effectively cure an infected person in just a single high dose; therefore, it is a highly recommended antibiotic.

How does Azithromycin work?

Azithromycin belongs to a group of medications known as macrolides. These work by preventing bacteria from multiplying, as it affects peptide activity and protein production require. When these two functions are inhibited, the infection can't stay alive and spread, leaving it vulnerable to the body's defence mechanisms. This causes the bacteria cells to die off, which then stops the infection.

What are the benefits of Azithromycin?

Azithromycin has a number of uses, and is a highly effective antibiotic treatment that's well tolerated and is particularly successful for treating sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, ureaplasma and mycoplasma. Azithromycin prevents the spread of the bacteria, so that your body's natural defences can fight back and remove the infection from your system. There are a number of benefits associated with this particular treatment...

  • It is one of the most convenient medications for chlamydia because it stays in the system for longer than most other treatments
  • It works faster and most people tend to see results within 3 to 5 days of taking the first pill, compared to other treatments that can take from 7 to 10 days
  • Can cure most infections with a single high dose
  • A single dose ensures that long-lasting side effects are far less likely to occur
  • Can treat more than one non-gonococcal infection at a time

How to use Azithromycin?

Azithromycin is taken differently depending on the bacterial infection that is being treated. In all cases, Azithromycin capsules should be taken an hour before meals or at least two hours after you have eaten. Even if you notice an improvement before the end of your prescribed course, you must keep taking the medication as prescribed. Stopping a course early may cause the bacteria to build up a resistance to the antibiotic.

After you have completed your course of treatment, you should wait around two weeks before taking another STI test to make sure that you are completely cured.

All Azithromycin capsules come with a patient leaflet and doctor's advice on what dosage to take depending on the infection you have.

  • For penile/vaginal chlamydia, a single 1000 mg (500 mg x 2 tablets) dose of Azithromycin is required for treatment. However, for ano-rectal chlamydia, a course of Doxycycline is required for successful treatment. In the case of both types, both treatments are required.
  • For ureaplasma, a single 1,000mg day dose is required for treatment.
  • For gonorrhoea, a single 1,000mg dose is required to treat the infection, together with a single dose of Cefixime.
  • Non-specific urethritis and mycoplasma require you to take 500mg x 2 together on day one, in which the infection will successfully be treated within seven days.

Who can take Azithromycin?

Make sure that you mention any medications you are currently taking during your consultation, and also provide detailed information about your health, such as whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. During the consultation, your online doctor will be able to confirm whether Azithromycin is safe for you to use.

What are the side effects of Azithromycin?

Antibiotics in general don't cause too many side effects and are very rare as they are mostly taken for a short period of time. Some people may be more susceptible to side effects because of a low tolerance to the active ingredients. Some of the most common side effects include mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach pain or upset, dizziness, tiredness, headaches, vaginal itching or discharge, mild itching or a skin rash. This still only affects a small eprcentage of people, however if any of these potential effects persist, or if you experience an allergic reaction, you should contact a doctor or your local GP.

What are the interactions of Azithromycin?

It is important to consider, when taking Azithromycin, what other prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and dietary supplements you are using. These may have a negative impact on you when used with Azithromycin. When it comes to other prescription medications, it is best practice to avoid mixing Azithromycin with blood thinners, medications used for blood clots, Amiodarone, Digoxin, typhoid vaccines and Quinidine. Also, alcohol can increase the likelihood of certain side effects occurring, such as an upset stomach and dizziness.
