Tamiflu FAQs

What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is a treatment for influenza, commonly known as 'the flu'. It attacks the influenza virus and prevents it from spreading throughout the body. Since 1999, Tamiflu has been used to successfully treat over 50 million cases of the different forms of influenza. In the 2009 H1N1 swine flu pandemic, Tamiflu was shown by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to work against over 98% of the 15,000 tested samples of the influenza virus. Tamiflu is administered orally in the form of a 75 mg tablet.

How does Tamiflu work?

Tamiflu works by blocking the spread of the flu virus, confining it to a smaller area and allowing the immune system to kill the virus. The result of taking Tamiflu is that the symptoms of influenza are significantly less severe and the time you feel ill is reduced.

Influenza is a contagious virus, which is passed from one person to another by coughing and sneezing. Once the virus enters the body, it invades cells and replicates to form new virus particles. These new copies of the virus are then released from the cells and move on to infect nearby cells, where the process is repeated. Rather than just dealing with the symptoms of influenza, Tamiflu actively helps to reduce the chance of further infection.

What are the benefits of using Tamiflu?

There are a number of benefits that can be experienced when taking Tamiflu tablets. These can include:

  • Duration of flu symptoms is reduced
  • Severity of flu symptoms is also reduced
  • Tamiflu can be used to prevent flu if you have been exposed to someone who has the virus
  • Tamiflu is highly effective during a flu outbreak within your community

How do I use Tamiflu?

The recommended oral dose of Tamiflu for treatment of influenza in adults and adolescents 13 years and older is:

  • One 75mg capsule taken twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening) for five days.
  • You are recommended to take Tamiflu with food to reduce the chance of feeling sick.
  • It is important to complete the full course of Tamiflu, even if you begin to feel better.
  • Treatment should begin within two days of the first symptoms of influenza.

You should take any missed doses as soon as you remember, except if it is near the next scheduled dose (within two hours), and then continue to take Tamiflu at the usual times. Never take a double dose to make up for a previously missed dose.

What precautions/interactions should I be aware of when using Tamiflu?

Tamiflu tablets can be taken by men and women over the age of 18, with influenza (flu). Before deciding to buy Tamiflu, there are some precautions that should be carefully considered, to ensure your safety.

  • Tamiflu should be used with caution if you are dealing with a decreased kidney function.
  • Tamiflu shouldn't be used as a general preventative measure for seasonal flu.
  • This medication shouldn't be used as a substitute for a seasonal flu vaccine.
  • Tamiflu shouldn't be taken if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the tablets.
  • You should stop using this treatment immediately if you feel you are having an allergic reaction. It is advised that you then inform your doctor.
  • You should consult with a doctor if you intend to use Tamiflu whilst you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

What are the side effects of Tamiflu?

It is possible that you may experience some side effects when taking Tamiflu tablets. Potential side effects can include:

  • Vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion, and tiredness.

These effects are considered to be common and highly unlikely to occur. If you do happen to experience any of these effects, they are likely to disappear within just a few days of treatment. If they persist, it is recommended that you talk to a doctor or your local GP to discuss your condition.
