More information about Trinovum
Trinovum is a triphasic combined oral contraceptive pill. This means that you will take three different doses during your cycle to reduce side effects, such as bleeding, spotting, mood swings, and amenorrhea (absence of a period). Trinovum doesn't only provide contraceptive cover, but is also a known treatment for endometriosis and can be prescribed to women who have irregular, heavy or painful periods.
Triphasic oral contraceptives prevent pregnancy with three different doses. This allows the number of hormones taken to rise and lower, depending on which stage of your menstrual cycle you are experiencing. Because it adapts to your natural cycle, the chance of you experiencing side effects such as bleeding, spotting, mood swings and missed periods (amenorrhea) is significantly reduced.
Trinovum provides immediate contraceptive cover if you take it on the first day of your cycle. Because it's a combined contraceptive, Trinovum can also help to reduce period pains and make your periods more regular. It's also used as a treatment for endometriosis, a common problem where womb cells grow outside of the womb on other cells.
No. Trinovum tablets will not protect you against any sexually transmitted diseases/infections. If you've had unprotected sex and are worried you might have contracted an STI, you should talk to your GP or visit your local sexual health clinic.
Alternatively, you can take a look at some of the options available from HealthExpress.
Trinovum uses two synthetic hormones, ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and norethisterone (progestogen) to influence your body's natural cycles. This is because it supplements your body with the hormone levels released during and after ovulation, so that your body thinks it has already occurred and that an egg has already been released.
The womb lining is also prevented from thickening, so should an egg be released, it won't be able to embed itself. As an additional measure, the hormones prevent semen from entering the womb by thickening the cervical fluid.
Trinovum is triphasic, which means that you take pills containing different doses of the active ingredients at different times in your cycle. You must take these pills in order that is suggested on the packaging. Trinovum is a 21 day pill, which means that there is a seven day break between 21 day strips. You will still be completely protected for those seven days.
For immediate cover you should start taking this contraceptive on the first day of your period. You start by taking seven white tablets containing 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 0.5 milligrams norethisterone, followed by seven light peach tablets containing 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 0.75 milligrams norethisterone. And you finish the course with seven darker peach tablets containing 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and 1 milligram norethisterone.
If you happen to forget to swallow your Trinovum pill at the scheduled time, take is as soon as you remember. However, if you realise that you've missed it by 24 hours or more, it is advised to follow these instructions:
If you have less than seven pills left in your packet of Trinovum, then you should finish it and then start a new one straight away without a break.
If you have seven or more pills left in the pack, you should finish it and have your normal 7-day break before opening the next one.
Use our interactive tool below on what to do if you miss one or multiple pills in one month (menstrual cycle). Simply click to begin.
*Vomiting and diarrhoea experienced within four hours of taking the pill is also classed as a missed pill.
*There are more than seven pills left in the pack. Continue to finish the pack, overlapping the seven-day break. Take your seven-day break and start your new pack as usual.
*There are fewer than seven pills left in the pack. Continue to finish the pack, overlapping the seven-day break. Start the new pack immediately after the old one is finished (missing out the seven-day break completely).
*If you have missed contraceptive pills in the first one to nine days of the pill pack and have had sex without barrier contraception, you could be pregnant. If you have calculated this between one to five days after the unprotected sex, you could use emergency contraception such as the IUD or morning-after pill. If not, continue your contraception until the seven-day break. If you don't have any bleeding, it is advised to take a pregnancy test and/or consult your doctor.
For more information about what to do if you've missed your dosage for a significant period, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
The Trinovum oral contraceptive pill comes in different dosage stages, designed to maintain effectiveness whilst simultaneously minimising possible side effects. This dosage cycle is standard and there aren't pills with increased or lowered amounts of the active ingredients available.

Before you find your ideal contraceptive pill you may have to try out the different variants of oral contraceptives available. Trinovum is very well tolerated because it provides the right amount of hormones at the right point in your cycle. Some of the more commonly reported side effects you may experience include:
These symptoms may appear when you start using the contraceptive, but should disappear as soon as your body has adjusted to the hormones. If they persist or you experience any more severe side effects, you may be advised to try a different contraceptive by your GP.
Most women over the age of 18 can use Trinovum for contraceptive cover. It is, however, important to mention any medications or past medical conditions during your consultation, as there are certain conditions or medications that may make it unsafe for you to take Trinovum. These include:
