More information about Anusol HC

What is Anusol HC?

Anusol HC cream, ointment and suppositories are a highly popular and effective form of treatment for haemorrhoids (piles). Working as a natural steroid, Anusol HC releases the chemicals only when you're experiencing the worse of symptoms, allowing you to carry on with your day hassle-free.

What is the difference between Anusol cream, ointment and suppositories?

The Anusol cream and the ointment contain the same active ingredients. The main difference is that Anusol ointment is thicker and is good for relieving the symptoms of sore, dry skin. Anusol cream is thinner and that means some people find it easier to rub in.

Anusol suppositories on the other hand are inserted directly inside the anus, however they all provide the same treatment, providing relief from piles.

How does Anusol work?

The key ingredient in Anusol HC is hydrocortisone acetate, which is a natural steroid. Steroids such as these work to reduce inflammation, by preventing substances from being released by your immune system. These immune chemicals are usually released when irritation occurs, which can happen as a result of strain placed on the blood vessels in the back passage.

In addition to hydrocortisone acetate, Anusol-HC ointment and suppositories contain the ingredients bismuth oxide, bismuth subgallate, Peru balsam and zinc oxide. These all work to have a mild antiseptic and astringent effect. The antiseptic properties of this treatment mean that it reduces the risk of possible infection while the astringent qualities also help reduce swelling by shrinking the blood vessels.

Zinc oxide and Bismuth salts in particular have the ability to aid healing while soothing and protecting particularly raw areas.

What are the benefits of Anusol HC?

Haemorrhoids or piles are small lumps caused by varicose veins that can develop either inside the anus or outside of the anus, causing a number of uncomfortable symptoms to occur such as irritation, itching and inflammation. Anusol HC ointment is an effective treatment that provides symptomatic relief of both internal and external haemorrhoids. Anusol HC is also available in suppository form to treat internal piles.

What does Anusol HC contain?

Anusol HC ointment contains benzyl benzoate (1.25%), bismuth oxide (0.875%), bismuth subgallate (2.25%), hydrocortisone acetate (0.25%), Peru balsam (1.875%), and zinc oxide (10.75%). Anusol HC suppositories contain benzyl benzoate 33mg, bismuth oxide 24mg, bismuth subgallate 59mg, hydrocortisone acetate 10mg, Peru balsam 49mg, and zinc oxide 296mg.

How do I use Anusol HC ointment?

The Anusol ointment comes with an applicator so that it can be easily applied to the external anal areas but also rectally with the help of the rectal nozzle.

For external haemorrhoids - the area around the anus

    • Squeeze a pea size amount onto your finger
    • Spread gently over the skin and leave
    • Do not rub the ointment in vigorously

For internal haemorrhoids - to be used inside the anus

    • Place the nozzle onto the top of the tube
    • Fill the nozzle with the ointment
    • This is the correct dosage for one application
    • Insert the nozzle into the anus slowly
    • The whole nozzle should be inside
    • Squeezing the tube gently, withdraw the nozzle
    • Wash nozzle thoroughly ready for next use

As a general rule of thumb, the Anusol HC ointment needs to be applied twice daily and then once a day when symptoms have cleared up.

If your symptoms are very severe, you could use the ointment 3-4 times on the first day.

    Suppositories:

The Anusol suppository should be inserted twice a day, just like the ointment, but should be inserted as far as possible into the back passage. These are mainly intended for internal piles that aren't visible externally. Moreover, the Anusol cream and ointment can be used to lubricate the area before the suppository usage.

    • Ensure your hands are washed thoroughly and dried
    • Wear a finger bud or disposable gloves if necessary

    1. Remove foil wrapper.
    2. Moisten the suppository with water or water-based lubricating jelly.
    3. Lie on your left side and bend your right knee up toward your chest. Gently push the suppository into your rectum so it is deep enough not to come out.
    4. Suppository
    5. Rectum

Again, treatment should not be continued for more than seven days unless your doctor has prescribed otherwise. If you do not see results within 3 months after using this treatment, it is recommended that you visit your doctor for a physical examination. Anusol suppositories can be used alongside cream or ointment.
