More information about Azithromycin
Azithromycin is an antibiotic that treats bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, non-specific urethritis, ureaplasma and mycoplasma in both men and women. It prevents infections from spreading by affecting the bacteria's ability to reproduce.
Azithromycin remains in the system for a longer period compared to most other antibiotic medications, so courses of this medicine are considerably shorter.
Please note, you should also only take it if you have been prescribed by a doctor - this is to guard against antibiotic resistance.
Azithromycin belongs to a class of antibiotics known as macrolides - these work by preventing the infection from spreading.
Azithromycin inhibits the bacteria’s peptide activity and protein production. When these two functions are stopped, cells cannot multiply, leaving it vulnerable to your body's immune system.
Please note, as this is an antibiotic treatment, you must complete the prescribed course. Even if symptoms disappear, the infection may not have cleared. It can return if the course is not completed. Stopping a course early can also cause the bacteria to build up a resistance to the antibiotic.
Azithromycin is taken differently depending on the infection that is being treated. Please follow the advice of your doctor when taking this treatment.
All orders include a patient leaflet and doctor's advice on what dosage to take depending on the infection you have.
After you have completed your course, you should wait around two weeks before taking another STI test to make sure that you are completely cured.
Please note, for chlamydia, non-specific urethritis and mycoplasma genitalium, Azithromycin is only recommended as a second-line treatment after first-line treatment with Doxycycline has proven unsuccessful.
If you find a course of this medication does not clear your infection, please visit your doctor - they may wish to prescribe a different course of treatment and investigate your condition further.
As with all medication, Azithromycin can cause side effects. These will not affect every patient and will have varying severity.
Usually, any reactions are mild and disappear on their own during the continuation of the treatment.
Some of the most common reactions include:
If you experience any of these for a prolonged time, or if you experience an allergic reaction, you should contact your doctor. Signs of an allergic reaction include skin rashes, swelling of the throat, face and mouth, and difficulty breathing.
You should mention any medications you are currently taking during your consultation, and also provide detailed information about your health (for example, whether you are pregnant or nursing a child).
If any of the following apply to you, you should consult with your doctor before taking Azithromycin:
You should also avoid alcohol when taking this treatment. The combination can increase the likelihood of certain adverse effects occurring, such as an upset stomach or dizziness.
As this medication can cause dizziness, you should exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.
Please note, the manufacturer has reported cases of rhabdomyolysis in people taking Azithromycin with statins, although this appears to be less common than with other macrolides. If you experience any muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, you should report this to your doctor.
