More information about Feanolla

What is Feanolla?

Feanolla is a progestogen-only contraceptive pil, also referred to as a ‘mini pill’. It contains 75mcg of a synthetic progesterone called desogestrel. When taken correctly, it is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Mini pills are different from the more well-known combined pills in that they only contain progestogen. They are often seen as a better option for those more likely to experience oestrogen-related side effects, such as those over the age of 35 or those who smoke. Feanolla also allows for greater flexibility - many mini pills require that you take them within a 3-hour window each day, but because Feanolla uses desogestrel, you have up to 12 hours to take your pill.

How does Feanolla work?

Progestogen-only pills prevent pregnancy by thickening the cervical mucus and thinning the lining of the womb, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg and for a fertilised egg to implant. Desogestrel, the type of progestogen used in Feanolla, can also prevent ovulation so that eggs cannot be fertilised.

How do I take Feanolla?

You should take one tablet at the same time each day for 28 days. There is no break between blister packs.

Take the first pill on the first day of your period (the first day you begin bleeding). If you are unable to do this, you can begin on day 2-5 of your cycle but you should use an additional contraception method for the first seven days you are on the tablets to prevent pregnancy.

It is important to follow the advice of the prescribing doctor as well as the instructions given in the patient information leaflet when taking any medication.

If you miss a pill

If you are less than 12 hours late in taking your pill, you should take the missed pill as soon as possible and continue taking the rest of your pack as normal. You will still be protected against pregnancy.

If you are over 12 hours late in taking your pill, its effectiveness will be reduced. You should take the missed pill as soon as possible and continue taking the rest of your pack as normal, using an additional barrier contraceptive method for the next 7 days.

Vomiting and diarrhoea

If you take your pill, but experience stomach upset soon after, this may also decrease the effectiveness of the pill. Treat any instance of severe stomach upset, like vomiting or diarrhoea, as though you have not taken your pill.

Do you have periods on this mini pill?

Some women find that they get their period while on the mini pill, while others do not. If you do get one, it may be lighter or more frequent.

What are the possible side effects of Feanolla?

Side effects are a possibility with most medications, although contraceptive pills are usually well tolerated.

Progestogen-only pills may have lower risks of oestrogen-caused side effects like headache, breast tenderness, bloating, and nausea.

Some of the most common side effects include:

  • mood changes
  • decreased sex drive
  • headaches
  • nausea
  • acne
  • breast pain or tenderness
  • irregular or absent periods
  • weight gain

Some women may not experience side effects, and some may be temporary as a result of starting the medication and will decrease over time.

For a complete list of side effects, read the prescription information leaflet. If you experience any side effects that seem concerning, consult your doctor for further advice.

What precautions should I take?

Feanolla is intended for sexually active women who want to prevent a pregnancy.

You should ensure you tell your doctor about any other medications or supplements you may be taking, even if they are not prescribed, as some medications can decrease the effectiveness of Feanolla, putting you at risk of pregnancy.

By accurately filling out your consultation, you will help the doctor ensure that this is the best treatment for you.

Feanolla does not protect you from sexually transmitted infections, so it is important to practise safe sex.

Serious risks associated with taking this medication are rare, but it is important to read the patient information leaflet fully before taking any medication.
